Preview: Saint John’s Visits Villanova in Key Big East Clash

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big East Conference men’s basketball matchup is set for Saturday when the Saint John’s Red Storm visit the Villanova Wildcats at The Pavilion.

Both teams enter on winning streaks, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest with implications for the conference standings. Villanova (14-3, 3-1 Big East) has won two straight, including an 88-82 road victory at Providence on Tuesday. Saint John’s (12-5, 4-1) has won three consecutive conference games, most recently a dominant 92-68 home win over Marquette, also on Tuesday.

The game features a compelling backcourt duel. Saint John’s is powered by the hot hand of guard Zuby Ejiofor, who is averaging 22.7 points over his last three games. He scored 22 points in 26 minutes against Marquette and had a 33-point, 15-rebound performance in a loss to Providence on Jan. 3.

Villanova counters with veteran guard Devin Askew, who is coming off a 20-point, 7-assist effort in the win at Providence. Askew provides steady leadership for a Wildcats squad that has shown resilience in close games, evidenced by a 76-73 win at Marquette on Jan. 10.

Saint John’s has found its rhythm in league play, averaging 89.3 points during its three-game win streak. Beyond Ejiofor, Oziyah Sellers added 24 points against Marquette. The Red Storm’s recent surge followed a challenging non-conference slate that included losses to Kentucky and Auburn.

Villanova’s strength lies in its balance and defense, allowing just 70.2 points per game. The Wildcats have navigated a tough early conference schedule, with their only league loss coming at home to Creighton on Jan. 7. Duke Brennan (14 points vs. Providence) and Tyler Perkins (15 points) offer consistent secondary scoring.

The Wildcats hold the home-court advantage at The Pavilion, where they are 8-1 this season. Saint John’s, however, has proven capable on the road with wins at Creighton, Butler and Georgetown already this month.

This marks the first meeting of the season between the programs. The outcome will solidify the winner’s position near the top of the congested Big East standings as the conference schedule nears its midpoint.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026.
