Ohio State Outlasts UCLA in High-Scoring Big Ten Contest

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase, the Ohio State Buckeyes outgunned the UCLA Bruins 86-74 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Value City Arena.

A crowd of 12,937 saw the Buckeyes (12-5) use a blistering offensive performance to pull away in the second half and hand the Bruins (12-6) their second loss in three games. The game, organized by the Big Ten, featured efficient scoring from the home team, which consistently answered every UCLA push.

The most critical phase of the game came early in the second half. Leading 42-36 at halftime, Ohio State opened the final period with a decisive 13-5 run, extending its lead to 55-41 with 17:29 remaining. The surge was fueled by John Mobley, who hit a three-pointer to start the half, and Devin Royal, who contributed five points during the stretch. UCLA never recovered from that deficit, unable to cut the Ohio State lead to single digits for the remainder of the contest.

Ohio State’s offensive efficiency was the story. The Buckeyes shot 52.8% from the field, converting 28 of 53 attempts, and were nearly flawless from the free-throw line, making 21 of 25. They also dominated inside, outscoring UCLA 28-16 in the paint. The Buckeyes scored 86 points on just 65 possessions, an offensive rating of 132.6.

UCLA, meanwhile, struggled with its shooting, making only 25 of 62 attempts from the floor for a 40.3% clip. The Bruins kept pace for a half thanks to a 9-for-23 performance from three-point range and by forcing 10 Ohio State turnovers, but they could not sustain their offensive output against Ohio State’s more consistent attack.

John Mobley led all scorers for Ohio State with 28 points, adding three rebounds and three assists. The guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, spearheaded the Buckeyes’ perimeter attack. He was complemented by a strong inside presence from Devin Royal, who finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, and Bruce Thornton, who added 21 points and eight rebounds.

UCLA’s effort was led by Tyler Bilodeau, who scored a team-high 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Donovan Dent facilitated the Bruins’ offense with 13 points and seven assists, while Eric Dailey provided 12 points off the bench.

Ohio State improved to 12-5 overall, while UCLA fell to 12-6. The Buckeyes next host Minnesota on Tuesday. UCLA returns home to face Purdue on Tuesday.
