Blackwell’s 27 Points Lead Wisconsin to Narrow Road Win Over Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a game that swung on a final, frantic minute, John Blackwell’s clutch shooting and a critical defensive stand lifted Wisconsin to a 78-75 victory over Minnesota in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Williams Arena.
A crowd of 10,914 saw the Badgers erase a seven-point halftime deficit with a torrid second-half offensive display, then hold off a desperate Golden Gophers rally in the closing seconds to secure the road win. The victory improved Wisconsin to 12-5 overall, while Minnesota fell to 10-7.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final 35 seconds with Wisconsin clinging to a 72-70 lead. Minnesota’s Isaac Asuma drove for a potential tying layup, but Wisconsin’s Braeden Carrington swatted the attempt away. Asuma collected the offensive rebound and found Langston Reynolds, whose follow-up also missed. Nolan Winter secured the defensive board for Wisconsin and was immediately fouled.
Winter missed both free throws, however, giving Minnesota life with 12 seconds left. Out of a timeout, the Golden Gophers executed perfectly, as Asuma found Cade Tyson for a deep 3-pointer from the wing, tying the game at 75 with just five seconds remaining.
Wisconsin, without a timeout, pushed the ball upcourt. Blackwell, who had carried the Badgers’ offense all night, took the inbound pass, raced across half-court, and pulled up from well beyond the arc. His 3-point jumper as time expired found nothing but net, silencing the Williams Arena crowd and delivering a dramatic win for the visitors.
Blackwell, a 6-foot-4 guard from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, finished with a game-high 27 points, including the game-winner, to go with five assists in 34 minutes. His performance continued a stellar stretch, following a 26-point effort in a win at Michigan last Saturday.
He was complemented by a breakout game from Braeden Carrington, a Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, native playing in his home state. The 6-foot-5 guard scored 21 points, all in the second half, and added two critical blocks, including the one on Asuma in the final minute. Nolan Winter, a 7-foot sophomore from Lakeville, Minnesota, added 12 points and was a force on the glass with several key defensive rebounds.
Minnesota was led by a balanced attack. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson scored 20 points, while Isaac Asuma had 17 points and five assists. Langston Reynolds posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists, and Cade Tyson contributed 14 points. The Golden Gophers controlled much of the first half, leading 35-28 at the break, but could not contain the Badgers’ backcourt duo of Blackwell and Carrington after halftime.
Wisconsin shot 50 points in the second half, a significant surge from their 28-point first-half output. Minnesota managed 40 points after halftime but was ultimately undone by Wisconsin’s late-game execution.
The game defied the pregame statistical projections. While Interstat’s ELO system gave Wisconsin a 68.9% probability to win and the Badgers were installed as 1.5-point favorites, the combined score of 153 went well over the over/under line of 143.5, fueled by the second-half offensive explosion.
The win gives Wisconsin momentum heading into a home matchup with Rutgers on Saturday. Minnesota, meanwhile, looks to regroup on the road at Illinois this Saturday. The two teams will meet again in Madison on Jan. 28.
