Oregon State at Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams seeking consistency will meet Saturday when the Oregon State Beavers visit the Portland Pilots at Chiles Center.
Oregon State (9-9) enters on the heels of a 68-55 home win over Seattle on Thursday. The Beavers have alternated wins and losses over their past six games. Forward Jorge Diaz Graham led the way against Seattle with 13 points and three blocks in 25 minutes. His production has fluctuated, however, including a 21-point, nine-rebound performance in a win at Arizona State last month followed by several quieter outings.
Portland (8-10) is coming off a dramatic 90-89 overtime victory against Pacific, also on Thursday. The Pilots have lost eight of their last 11 but are powered by guard Joel Foxwell, who is in the midst of a stellar individual stretch. Foxwell scored 27 points with seven assists in 42 minutes against Pacific, following a 20-point effort at San Francisco. Over his last five games, he is averaging 18.4 points and 9.2 assists.
The matchup pits Oregon State’s defense, which held Seattle to 55 points, against a Portland offense that has scored at least 85 points in four of its last six contests. The Beavers will need to contain Foxwell’s playmaking to slow the Pilot attack.
Historically, this regional rivalry has been closely contested. Both teams will look to use this nonconference matchup to build momentum before resuming their respective conference schedules next week.
Saturday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. PST. Oregon State visits Loyola Marymount next on Jan. 14, while Portland opens a road trip at Pepperdine the same day.
