Weber State Edges Northern Colorado in Tight Big Sky Contest

GARDEN CITY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its frantic final minute, the Weber State Wildcats erased a late deficit with clutch free-throw shooting and a critical defensive stand to stun the Northern Colorado Bears 76-71 in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.

The most important sequence of the contest unfolded in the last five seconds. Trailing 71-70, Weber State’s Tijan Saine was fouled and sent to the line with 5 seconds remaining. The sophomore guard from Everett, Washington, calmly sank both free throws to put the Wildcats ahead by one. On the ensuing inbounds play, Northern Colorado’s Brock Wisne was called for an offensive foul, turning the ball back over to Weber State with just 2 seconds left.

Saine was again fouled and again made both free throws, sealing a victory that seemed improbable just moments earlier. The Bears, who led for over 33 minutes of game time, were left to rue missed opportunities and crucial turnovers down the stretch.

The game was a tense, back-and-forth affair throughout. Northern Colorado, playing in front of a home crowd of 1,470, took a 37-34 lead into halftime behind balanced scoring and a strong interior presence. The Bears extended their advantage to as many as eight points in the second half, largely through the efforts of Quinn Denker and Brock Wisne. Denker, a guard from San Jose, California, finished with 17 points and six assists, while Wisne, a forward from Thornton, Colorado, added 17 points and two assists.

Weber State, however, refused to fold. The Wildcats chipped away at the lead, fueled by the scoring of Edwin Suarez and timely contributions from their bench. Suarez, a forward from San Juan, Puerto Rico, led all scorers with 18 points, often scoring in traffic to keep his team within striking distance. Saine provided a critical spark off the bench, contributing 17 points in just 22 minutes, with the final four being the most decisive.

The Wildcats’ defense also stiffened when it mattered most. After a Zach Bloch free throw gave Northern Colorado a 71-70 lead with 8 seconds left, Weber State’s pressure forced the turnover that led to Saine’s game-winning trips to the foul line. The Bears’ final attempt to tie or win the game never materialized.

Beyond Suarez and Saine, Weber State received a solid performance from Nigel Burris, who scored 11 points. For Northern Colorado, Ring Nyeri joined Denker and Wisne in double figures, scoring 16 points and adding a blocked shot.

The victory improved Weber State’s season record to 9-8 overall and marked its second consecutive conference win. The loss dropped Northern Colorado to 11-6, snapping a two-game winning streak in Big Sky play. The result was an upset according to pregame analytics, which heavily favored the Bears at home.

The game was characterized by physical play and numerous lead changes, with neither team able to secure a comfortable advantage. Both sides struggled with consistency from the field, leading to a contest decided more by perseverance and execution in the final possessions than by offensive artistry.

Weber State will look to continue its momentum when it returns home to host Eastern Washington on Thursday. Northern Colorado aims to rebound on the road at Portland State, also on Thursday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Ogden, Utah, on Feb. 5.
