Blue Raiders Edge Aggies in Defensive Conference USA Battle
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle where points were at a premium, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders made just enough plays in the final minute to escape the Pan American Center with a 59-55 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies in a Conference USA men’s basketball game on Saturday.
The game, played before a crowd of 2,852, was a contest of attrition defined by missed shots and critical turnovers. Neither team shot better than 36% from the field, and the combined 18 assists underscored the offensive difficulties throughout the evening.
Middle Tennessee, which improved to 10-6 overall, was led by Torey Alston’s team-high 16 points. The 6-foot-8 forward from Durham, North Carolina, also added a key steal and defensive rebound in the closing moments. Guard Jahvin Carter of Alcoa, Tennessee, provided crucial support with 10 points and a game-high five assists.
New Mexico State, which fell to 9-6, saw its two-game winning streak snapped despite 16 points from Chicago native Jemel Jones. Cyr Malonga, a 6-foot-11 center from Pointe-Noire, Congo, added 10 points and a blocked shot for the Aggies.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final 30 seconds with Middle Tennessee clinging to a 57-55 lead. After a missed Aggies three-pointer, the Blue Raiders’ Kamari Lands secured a vital steal from New Mexico State’s Jayland Randall with 15 seconds remaining. Lands, however, immediately turned the ball back over on an out-of-bounds violation, giving the Aggies a final chance to tie or take the lead.
On the ensuing inbounds play, the Aggies’ Jayland Randall again lost possession, this time stolen by Lands. Fouled immediately, Lands went to the free-throw line but missed the front end of a one-and-one with nine seconds left, preserving the two-point margin.
New Mexico State secured the rebound and called a timeout to set up a final play. Out of the stoppage, the Aggies worked the ball to Randall for a potential game-winning three-pointer, but his attempt from the wing was off the mark. Middle Tennessee’s Jahvin Carter corralled the defensive rebound and was fouled with six seconds on the clock.
Carter sank the first free throw to extend the lead to 58-55 but missed the second. A scramble for the rebound resulted in a held ball, with the possession arrow favoring Middle Tennessee. Alston was fouled on the ensuing inbounds and made one of two free throws with two seconds left to seal the four-point victory.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for much of the night. New Mexico State built an early 20-11 lead behind an aggressive start from Jones and Malonga. Middle Tennessee responded with a 13-4 run, capped by a Sean Smith three-pointer, to tie the game at 24-24 late in the first half. The teams entered halftime deadlocked at 29-29.
The second half featured seven ties and five lead changes. Middle Tennessee seemed to gain separation with a 7-0 run, highlighted by an alley-oop from Carter to Alston, to take a 49-43 lead with just over eight minutes to play. The Aggies chipped away, tying the game at 51-51 on a Jones jumper and again at 54-54 on a Randall three-pointer with under three minutes remaining.
Alston then hit a driving layup to put the Blue Raiders ahead for good at 56-54, setting the stage for the tense final minute defined by defensive stops and costly turnovers.
Statistically, the game was won on margins. Middle Tennessee committed only seven turnovers while forcing New Mexico State into 11. The Blue Raiders also managed a slightly more efficient offensive performance, posting a 93.1 offensive rating on 63 possessions compared to the Aggies’ 84.0 rating on 65 trips.
Both teams continue Conference USA play next week. Middle Tennessee travels to face Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. New Mexico State hits the road for a game at Liberty on Thursday.
