BYU at Utah
SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — The resurgent BYU Cougars, boasting one of the nation’s top records, will face their in-state rival Utah Utes at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Saturday in a nonconference showdown highlighting two of the state’s premier programs.
BYU (13-1) enters the rivalry game on a seven-game winning streak, including a dominant 104-76 victory over Arizona State on Wednesday. The Cougars’ high-powered offense has scored 100 or more points in four of their last six contests.
Utah (8-7) looks to stabilize its season after dropping three straight games, most recently an 85-73 loss at Colorado. The Utes have struggled against power-conference opponents, posting a 1-6 record in such matchups this season.
A key matchup will feature BYU guard Richie Saunders against Utah guard Don McHenry. Saunders is averaging 22.0 points over his last six games, coming off a career-high 31-point performance against Arizona State. McHenry has been a bright spot for Utah, averaging 20.6 points over his last five outings, including a 29-point game against Mississippi State and a 27-point effort versus Eastern Washington.
The Cougars have displayed remarkable balance, with Robert Wright (27 points) and AJ Dybantsa (23 points) joining Saunders in overwhelming Arizona State. Utah will counter with McHenry and forwards Keanu Dawes and Terrence Brown, who combined for 56 points in the loss to Colorado.
This game renews one of the West’s most intense rivalries. BYU’s only loss this season was a narrow 86-84 defeat at then-Connecticut in November. Utah’s most notable win was a 75-74 victory at Mississippi.
Following this matchup, both teams dive into their conference schedules. BYU will host TCU on Jan. 14, while Utah travels to face Texas Tech the same day. The in-state rivals will meet again in Provo on Jan. 24.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
