San Jose State at Grand Canyon
PHOENIX (Interstat) — The Grand Canyon Antelopes look to continue their strong start to conference play when they host the struggling San Jose State Spartans in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at GCU Arena.
Grand Canyon (9-5) enters the matchup off a decisive 75-58 road victory over Boise State on Wednesday. The Antelopes have won four of their last five games, with their only loss in that stretch a 70-60 defeat to Colorado State.
A key to their success has been the play of guard Jaden Henley, who is coming off a 22-point performance against Boise State. Over his last four games, Henley is averaging 20.3 points, including a 29-point outburst in a win over IUPUI on Dec. 22.
San Jose State (5-10) seeks to snap a five-game losing streak. The Spartans fell 70-55 to Fresno State at home on Tuesday, their fourth consecutive loss by double digits. During this skid, their defense has allowed an average of 83 points per game.
Guard Melvin Bell has been a consistent bright spot for the Spartans amid the slump, scoring in double figures in five straight games. He led the team with 16 points in the loss to Fresno State.
The Antelopes hold a clear advantage in record and recent form. They are 6-1 at home this season, with notable victories over Utah and Wyoming. San Jose State is 1-5 in true road games, with its lone win coming at Loyola Chicago in November.
This contest is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this season. They are slated to meet again in San Jose on Feb. 14.
Following this game, Grand Canyon travels to face New Mexico on Tuesday. San Jose State returns home to host Air Force on Tuesday.
