Texas Tech at Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season Big 12 clash is set for Saturday at the Coors Events Center as the Colorado Buffaloes host the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Both teams enter with strong overall records, but are looking to solidify their conference standing. Colorado (12-3, 2-1 Big 12) is coming off an 85-73 home victory over Utah, while Texas Tech (11-4, 1-1) seeks to rebound from a narrow 69-65 road loss at Houston this past Tuesday.
The matchup features two of the league’s most dynamic forwards. Texas Tech is powered by sophomore JT Toppin, who is playing at an All-Conference level. Over his last six games, Toppin is averaging 21.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks, including a 30-point, 11-rebound effort at Arkansas and a 23-point, 14-rebound double-double against Oklahoma State. His rim protection and scoring will be central to the Red Raiders’ game plan.
Colorado counters with versatile forward Sebastian Rancik. The sophomore has been a model of consistency, scoring in double figures in every game this season. He’s averaging 15.3 points over his last six contests, including a 19-point performance in the win over Utah. His ability to stretch the floor and defend multiple positions will be key against Tech’s athletic lineup.
The Buffaloes have been strong at home, with their only blemish in Boulder a surprising 86-81 loss to Northern Colorado in non-conference play. Texas Tech, however, has proven it can win in tough environments, securing an 82-81 victory at Duke in December.
This game represents a critical early test in the Big 12 gauntlet. For Colorado, it’s a chance to protect home court and build momentum before a difficult two-game road trip next week. For Texas Tech, it’s an opportunity to steal a key road win and immediately bounce back from its loss at Houston.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST Saturday. The teams will meet again in Lubbock on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
