Saint John`s at Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — A pair of Big East teams riding the momentum of key road wins will clash Saturday when the Saint John’s Red Storm visit the Creighton Bluejays at CHI Health Center.
The matchup features two squads with identical 10-5 overall records, though both seek more consistency in conference play. Saint John’s (1-1 Big East) arrives after an 84-70 victory at Butler on Tuesday, while Creighton (2-1) is coming off a 76-72 win at Villanova on Wednesday.
The Red Storm will lean on the explosive form of forward Zuby Ejiofor, who is averaging 22.1 points over his last seven games. He is coming off a 33-point, 15-rebound performance in a loss to Providence on Jan. 3 and scored 18 in the win at Butler. His interior presence will test a Creighton defense that has been stout at home.
The Bluejays counter with their own hot hand in guard Austin Swartz. The sophomore has scored 20 or more points in three of his last five outings, including a team-high 20 in the win at Villanova. His perimeter scoring will be vital against a Saint John’s team that has shown offensive firepower, averaging 86.4 points in its 10 wins.
Creighton has dominated recent meetings, winning the last five against Saint John’s. The Bluejays are 7-1 at home this season, with their only loss at CHI Health Center coming against Kansas State in December. Saint John’s has struggled away from home, with a 2-3 record in true road games, including a loss at Kentucky.
Saturday’s contest is the first of two meetings this season. The result will provide early positioning in a crowded Big East standings race. Following this game, Saint John’s hosts Marquette on Tuesday, while Creighton welcomes Georgetown.
