Elon Edges Campbell in Colonial Athletic Association Thriller
ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a Colonial Athletic Association clash defined by razor-thin margins and explosive individual performances, the Elon Phoenix edged the Campbell Fightin’ Camels 83-82 in a heart-stopping finish Saturday night at Schar Center.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,743, was a tale of two halves and ultimately decided by Elon’s superior efficiency in the paint and a critical final defensive stand. Campbell guard DJ Smith delivered a heroic 32-point effort, but it was not enough to overcome a balanced Phoenix attack led by Chandler Cuthrell and Kacper Klaczek, who each scored 20 points.
Campbell established control early, leveraging hot three-point shooting to build a lead. Smith, a 6-foot guard from Dallas, Texas, was the catalyst, hitting from deep and creating opportunities. The Fightin’ Camels shot 46.2% from beyond the arc in the opening period, with Cam Gregory adding three triples of his own. Elon, meanwhile, struggled to find an early rhythm against Campbell’s defense, which recorded three first-half blocks, two from Muneer Newton. The visitors took a 43-37 advantage into halftime.
The second half saw a dramatic reversal. Elon emerged with renewed focus on attacking the interior, relentlessly pounding the ball inside. The Phoenix scored 50 points in the paint for the game, with 30 coming after the break. Their offensive rating of 120.7 on 69 possessions underscored a period of highly efficient scoring. Cuthrell, a 6-foot-8 forward from Baltimore, Maryland, and Klaczek, a 6-foot-8 forward from Chorzow, Poland, became unstoppable forces, finishing through contact and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities from eight offensive rebounds.
Elon’s 46-point second-half outburst was a direct response to Campbell’s early success. The Phoenix methodically chipped away at the deficit, tying the game and then engaging in a tense back-and-forth duel over the final ten minutes. The teams traded leads seven times in the half, with neither able to secure more than a five-point advantage.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final 38 seconds with Elon clinging to an 83-81 lead. Campbell, after a timeout, inbounded the ball to Smith, who had been brilliant all night. As he attempted to navigate a screen near the top of the key, Elon’s Klaczek reached in and stripped the ball cleanly. The steal by the Polish forward, who also contributed three assists and a block, was the game’s pivotal defensive play.
Campbell was forced to foul, sending Elon’ Ned Hull to the line with 11 seconds left. Hull missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Fightin’ Camels a final chance to tie or win. Smith secured the defensive rebound and pushed the ball upcourt. With five seconds remaining, Campbell used its final timeout to advance the ball to the frontcourt.
On the ensuing inbounds play, the ball found its way to reserve guard Tasos Cook, who had subbed in for the final possession. Cook launched a contested jumper from just inside the three-point line as time expired. The shot missed its mark, and Elon secured the defensive rebound as the horn sounded, sealing the one-point victory.
Beyond Smith’s 32 points and four assists for Campbell, Jeremiah Johnson added 13 points and Gregory finished with 16 points and four assists. Dovydas Butka, Campbell’s 6-foot-9 forward from Lithuania, facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists to go with nine points.
Elon’s victory was a product of shared responsibility. Alongside Cuthrell and Klaczek, guards Randall Pettus and Ja’Juan Carr each scored 17 points. Pettus dished out four assists, while Carr added three. DeMarco Johnson, despite scoring only four points, made his presence felt with four assists and two critical blocks in just 11 minutes of action.
Statistically, the game highlighted a contrast in styles. Campbell’s offense relied heavily on the three-pointer, making 12 of 26 attempts, and they committed only eight turnovers. Elon countered by dominating inside, shooting 56.5% from the floor overall and converting Campbell’s 10 turnovers into 12 points. The Phoenix, however, nearly gave the game away at the free throw line, making just 4 of 10 attempts.
With the win, Elon improves to 11-6 overall and continues a strong start to its conference schedule. Campbell falls to 9-9, seeing a two-game winning streak snapped in agonizing fashion. The Fightin’ Camels will look to regroup on the road at UNC Wilmington next Saturday. Elon travels to face Northeastern on Thursday.
