Charlotte Pulls Away From UTSA for Road Conference Win

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Charlotte 49ers used a dominant first-half defensive performance and a balanced scoring effort to secure a 74-58 road victory over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Convocation Center.

Charlotte (8-8, 1-1 AAC) never trailed, building an early double-digit lead and holding UTSA (4-11, 0-2) to just 26 first-half points on 29% shooting. The 49ers led by as many as 18 points in the opening period and maintained control throughout the second half, answering every Roadrunner push to even their conference record.

The most important part of the game was Charlotte’s initial surge and subsequent defensive lockdown in the first half. After trading early three-pointers, the 49ers embarked on a 15-0 run over a nearly six-minute span to seize a 20-3 lead. The run was fueled by stifling defense that forced UTSA into seven consecutive missed field goals and three turnovers. Charlotte’s length and activity, culminating in six blocks for the game, disrupted UTSA’s offense from the outset and established a tone that persisted for the full 40 minutes.

Ben Bradford led all scorers with 18 points for Charlotte, showcasing efficiency inside by making eight of his 13 field goal attempts. The 49ers also received significant contributions from their bench, with center Anton Bonke adding 14 points and seven rebounds and guard Damoni Harrison chipping in 11 points. Major Freeman and Dezayne Mingo each scored 10 points, with Mingo dishing out a game-high five assists.

UTSA, which has lost eight of its last nine games, was led by Austin Nunez’s 16 points and Dorian Hayes’ 15 points. Jamir Simpson added 11 points for the Roadrunners, but the team struggled to find consistent offense, shooting just 35.6% from the field and posting an offensive rating of 87.0 points per 100 possessions.

Charlotte’s offensive execution, while not spectacular, was effective enough, scoring 113.6 points per 100 possessions. The 49ers won the battle in the paint 32-24 and capitalized on second chances with 12 offensive rebounds leading to 13 second-chance points. Perhaps most critically, Charlotte committed only nine turnovers, negating a potential avenue for a UTSA comeback.

The Roadrunners showed brief signs of life after halftime, cutting the deficit to 11 points on multiple occasions. A three-pointer from Hayes made it 45-34 with 13:50 remaining, but Charlotte responded with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Bradford three-pointer, to push the lead back to 18 and effectively seal the outcome.

The victory provides a positive start to a two-game Texas road swing for Charlotte, which visits Rice on Sunday. UTSA, still searching for its first AAC win, will host Tulane on Saturday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Charlotte entered with a 51.3% probability to win, slightly outperforming that projection as a 3-point pregame favorite. The combined score of 132 points fell under the betting over/under line of 142.5. An announced crowd of 623 attended the game at UTSA’s Convocation Center.
