Arkansas Outlasts Tennessee in High-Paced SEC Showdown
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a pivotal early-season Southeastern Conference clash, the Arkansas Razorbacks used a dominant second-half performance and a parade to the free-throw line to defeat the Tennessee Volunteers 86-75 on Saturday afternoon before a raucous sellout crowd of 19,200 at Bud Walton Arena.
The game, a battle of teams with strong non-conference records, turned decisively in the final 20 minutes. After a tightly contested first half that saw Arkansas take a slim 37-36 lead into the break, the Razorbacks exploded for 49 points in the second period. The catalyst was an overwhelming disparity in free-throw attempts and conversions, which ultimately proved to be the difference.
Arkansas shot 29 of 33 from the charity stripe, capitalizing on an aggressive offensive approach that drew frequent fouls. Tennessee, by stark contrast, managed only 12 of 23 from the line. This 17-point advantage at the line more than accounted for the final margin, as the Volunteers actually shot a better percentage from the field, making 29 of 59 attempts compared to Arkansas’ 25 of 59.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the second half as Arkansas steadily built its lead through relentless penetration and physical play. Tennessee, which entered the game with a 64.8% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, struggled to contain Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. and could not sustain its offensive flow amidst the constant stoppages. The Razorbacks, installed as a slim 1.5-point pregame favorite, methodically pulled away, holding the Volunteers to just 39 second-half points while their own offense found a consistent rhythm.
Acuff Jr., a guard from Detroit, was the game’s standout performer, leading all scorers with 29 points. He added four assists and was instrumental in breaking down Tennessee’s defense, frequently drawing fouls and going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. He was supported by a balanced attack: Meleek Thomas scored 18 points, Malique Ewin added 12 points and four blocks, and Karter Knox chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Ewin’s presence in the paint was a major factor, as Arkansas outblocked Tennessee 10-2.
Tennessee was led by Amari Evans with 16 points, while Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 14 and Nate Ament contributed 13. The Volunteers won the turnover battle, forcing 14 while committing 12, and also had edges in steals (11-8) and assists (11-8). However, their inability to convert free throws and to stem Arkansas’ second-half surge at the foul line sealed their fate.
The victory improves Arkansas to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the SEC, while Tennessee falls to 10-3 and 0-1 in conference play. The total score of 161 points went over the pregame over/under line of 153.5.
Arkansas next travels to face Mississippi on Wednesday. Tennessee returns home to host Texas on Tuesday, looking to rebound from its first conference loss.
