Nicholls State Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Texas A&M-Commerce
THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — Nicholls State used a dominant opening blitz and a barrage of three-pointers to overwhelm Texas A&M-Commerce 80-58 in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Stopher Gym.
The Colonels (6-8, 2-0) seized control from the opening tip, forcing three quick turnovers and racing to a 14-0 lead before the Lions (6-9, 1-2) managed their first points. That early defensive pressure set the tone for the game, as Nicholls State converted 19 Texas A&M-Commerce turnovers into 32 points.
Sincere Malone led all scorers with 21 points for Nicholls State, adding four assists and four steals. He was one of three Colonels to score 17 points, joined by Jaylen Searles, who also had seven assists, and Christian Winborne, who hit five three-pointers. The Colonels shot 14 of 34 from beyond the arc, a stark contrast to the Lions’ frigid 3-of-24 performance from deep.
The most important part of the game was the initial 14-0 run by Nicholls State, which established an immediate and decisive gap. The Colonels’ defensive intensity caused chaos for the Lions’ offense, leading to multiple shot-clock violations and rushed possessions. Texas A&M-Commerce never recovered, trailing by as many as 25 points in the second half.
Texas A&M-Commerce, which shot just 43.6% from the field, was led by Josh Taylor and Noah Pagotto, who each scored 17 points. The Lions held a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint, but their inability to protect the ball or connect from the perimeter proved insurmountable.
Nicholls State led 31-25 at halftime and exploded for 49 points in the second half, shooting 50% from the field after the break to pull away. The Colonels also won the rebounding battle 42-35, including 15 offensive boards.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 613. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Nicholls State entered with a 90.3% probability to win.
