Niagara Edges Sacred Heart in Tight Metro Atlantic Affair

SANBORN, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grinding defense and squandered opportunities, the Niagara Purple Eagles edged the Sacred Heart Pioneers 64-61 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Friday afternoon at a sparsely populated Gallagher Center.

The contest, witnessed by 708 fans, saw Niagara improve to 4-9 overall while Sacred Heart fell to 5-10. The outcome defied pregame projections, as Sacred Heart entered as a 3.5-point favorite with a 61.9% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final chaotic seconds. Trailing 61-61 with under 30 seconds to play, Niagara appeared to stall, committing a shot clock violation with 28.8 seconds remaining, handing Sacred Heart a chance to hold for a final shot. The Pioneers, however, gave it right back. Dashon Gittens of Sacred Heart turned the ball over on the ensuing inbound play, with Niagara’s Josiah Sabino recording the steal.

After a full timeout with 7.7 seconds left, Niagara executed its final play. Trenton Walters, from Frisco, Texas, found Reggie Prudhomme for a clutch 3-pointer from the wing with just 2 seconds on the clock, breaking the tie and providing the final margin. Sacred Heart’s desperation heave at the buzzer fell short.

The game-winning shot capped a second half where Niagara consistently held a narrow lead, despite Sacred Heart’s persistent efforts to close the gap. The Pioneers, who trailed 32-24 at halftime, outscored Niagara 37-32 after the break but could never reclaim a lead they last held at 2-0 in the opening minute.

Niagara’s efficiency proved decisive. The Purple Eagles scored 64 points on just 54 possessions, an offensive rating of 119.2, while Sacred Heart managed only 61 points on 63 possessions, a rating of 97.5. Niagara shot 48.9% from the field (23 of 47) and a sharp 41.7% from 3-point range (10 of 24). Sacred Heart struggled offensively, shooting 37.7% overall (20 of 53) and 26.1% from beyond the arc (6 of 23).

Justin Page led all scorers, powering Niagara with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including four 3-pointers. The junior from Peoria, Illinois, added four rebounds and two assists. Landon Williams contributed 11 points, all in the first half, and Walters finished with eight points and two assists, including the game-winning pass.

For Sacred Heart, Dashon Gittens posted a team-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Fallou Gueye, from Raleigh, North Carolina, added 10 points, and Yann Farell of Crowley, Texas, also scored 10, hitting two key second-half 3-pointers to keep the Pioneers close. Jaden Slaughter of Buffalo, New York, provided eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.

The Pioneers dominated the offensive glass, 12-5, leading to a 15-5 advantage in second-chance points, but negated that edge with 13 turnovers against only four assists. Niagara committed just six turnovers and dished out six assists. The Purple Eagles also had advantages in steals (6-4) and blocks (3-2).

Sacred Heart’ defense initially kept them in the game during a frigid first-half shooting performance for both teams. The Pioneers shot just 32% in the opening period but trailed by only eight due to holding Niagara to 39% shooting. The Purple Eagles created separation with a 7-0 run late in the half, capped by a Walters 3-pointer with nine seconds left, to establish their 32-24 halftime lead.

Niagara maintained a cushion between five and nine points for much of the second half, weathering every Sacred Heart push. The Pioneers finally drew even at 61-61 on a driving layup by Gittens with 2:28 remaining, setting the stage for the tense, turnover-filled final minutes that culminated in Prudhomme’s decisive three.

Both teams return to MAAC action on Sunday. Sacred Heart travels to face Canisius, while Niagara hosts Fairfield. The two teams will meet again in a rematch at Sacred Heart on Jan. 24.
