Michigan State at Nebraska
Preview: Michigan State at Nebraska Set for Top-5 Big Ten Clash
LINCOLN, Neb. (Interstat) — A battle of unbeatens in Big Ten play and a showdown between two of the nation’s top teams will highlight the conference slate Friday when Michigan State visits Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Both teams enter with sterling records and championship aspirations. The Spartans (12-1, 1-0 Big Ten) have won five straight since their only loss to then-Duke. The Cornhuskers (13-0, 2-0) are one of just four remaining undefeated teams in Division I, boasting early conference wins over Wisconsin and Illinois.
The matchup features a compelling contrast in backcourt versus frontcourt prowess. Michigan State is powered by the dynamic play of guard Jeremy Fears, who is averaging 17.2 points and 9.2 assists over his last five games. He is coming off a 21-point, 11-assist performance in a 114-97 win over Cornell on Monday.
Nebraska counters with a versatile and efficient forward in Berke Buyuktuncel. The sophomore has scored in double figures in three of his last five outings, including a 14-point effort in Tuesday’s 86-55 rout of New Hampshire. His defensive presence, with at least one block in each of those games, will be key against Michigan State’s penetration.
The Spartans have relied on a balanced attack behind Fears, with Coen Carr (19 points vs. Cornell) and Divine Ugochukwu providing consistent secondary scoring. Nebraska’s depth has been a hallmark, evidenced by Pryce Sandfort’s team-high 19 points and Braden Frager’s 15 points in the win over New Hampshire.
This game marks the first top-5 matchup in the history of Pinnacle Bank Arena, which opened in 2013. Nebraska seeks its first 14-0 start in program history, while Michigan State aims to hand the Huskers their first loss and secure a premier road victory.
Historically, Michigan State has dominated the series, but Nebraska’s win in Lincoln last season signaled a shift. The Huskers’ perfect record will face its toughest test yet against a Spartan squad ranked in the top 10 nationally in offensive efficiency.
The winner will seize early control of the Big Ten race. Michigan State hosts Southern California on Monday. Nebraska travels to Ohio State on Monday.
