Preview: New Mexico State at Florida International
WESTCHESTER, Fla. (Interstat) — Conference USA men’s basketball play opens Friday as the New Mexico State Aggies visit the Florida International Golden Panthers.
The Aggies (8-3) enter with momentum from a dominant 104-33 victory over Southwest on Dec. 28. New Mexico State has won two straight and five of its last six, with its only loss in that span coming on the road at Tulsa. The Golden Panthers (7-5) look to rebound from a narrow 97-94 overtime home loss to Liberty on that same date.
New Mexico State’s backcourt will be guided by Chris Terrell, who is coming off a near double-double with 12 points and nine assists in 22 minutes against Southwest. His playmaking will be key against an FIU defense that allows an average of 79.2 points per game.
Florida International will counter with forward Eric Dibami, who scored 21 points in the overtime loss to Liberty. He also recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Trinity on Dec. 22, showcasing his versatility. His interior presence will test an Aggies squad that has held opponents under 70 points in seven of its eight wins.
The Aggies have been strong on the road this season, posting a 3-2 record away from home, including a notable win at UC Irvine. FIU is 6-2 at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center, with its only home losses coming to James Madison and Liberty.
This matchup begins a critical conference slate for both teams. New Mexico State aims to solidify its status as a CUSA contender, while Florida International seeks a statement win to improve its standing.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Friday at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
