Ohio State Outlasts Rutgers in Big Ten Road Test

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — In a gritty Big Ten road opener defined by a decisive second-half surge, the Ohio State Buckeyes overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 80 to 73 on Friday night at a raucous Louis Brown Athletic Center.

A crowd of 8,000 saw the visiting Buckeyes, who improved to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, erase a four-point halftime hole by clamping down defensively after the break. Rutgers, which led 41-37 at intermission, was held to 32 second-half points as its offensive rhythm disintegrated against a more disciplined Ohio State effort. The Scarlet Knights fell to 7-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded over a five-minute stretch late in the second half. With Ohio State clinging to a narrow 65-63 lead and just over seven minutes remaining, the Buckeyes engineered a game-sealing 10-2 run. The sequence was anchored by defense and the scoring of Bruce Thornton. It began with a Thornton three-pointer, assisted by Colin White, to push the lead to five. Following a Rutgers turnover, Devin Royal was fouled on a layup and completed the three-point play. After another defensive stop, Thornton found Christoph Tilly for an easy layup, capping the run and extending the Ohio State advantage to 75-65 with 3:23 to play. Rutgers never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Thornton, the sophomore guard from Fairburn, Georgia, led all scorers with 20 points, adding four assists and three steals in 36 minutes of action. His backcourt mate, John Mobley of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, provided crucial support with 12 points and four assists. The Buckeyes’ frontcourt balance was key, as forward Devin Royal of Pickerington, Ohio, scored 16 points and Brandon Noel of Lucasville, Ohio, added 14 points off the bench, including several important baskets in the first half to keep Ohio State within striking distance.

Rutgers was powered by the dynamic play of freshman guard Tariq Francis. The Pittsburgh native poured in 17 of his team-high 17 points in a scintillating first-half performance, single-handedly propelling the Scarlet Knights to their lead. His backcourt partner, Dylan Grant of Mississauga, Canada, finished with 14 points. However, Francis was limited to just two points in the second half as Ohio State adjusted its defensive focus.

The game began at a breakneck pace. Ohio State’s 7-foot center Christoph Tilly of Berlin, Germany, opened the scoring with an and-one layup, but Rutgers responded with an early 10-2 spurt, showcasing their transition game. The first half became a shootout, featuring 11 lead changes. Francis caught fire for Rutgers, hitting a trio of three-pointers and a series of difficult pull-up jumpers. Ohio State stayed close thanks to the interior work of Noel and Royal, and a late first-half dunk by Noel sent the Buckeyes into the locker room down just 41-37.

The second half narrative shifted completely. Ohio State’s defense intensified, disrupting passing lanes and contesting every shot. Rutgers, which had shot efficiently in the first half, began to misfire, while the Buckeyes methodically worked their offense. A Mobley three-pointer at the 16:41 mark gave Ohio State a lead it would not relinquish. Though Rutgers hung around, tying the game at 53-53 on a Kaden Powers three-pointer, the Buckeyes immediately answered with a Thornton jumper to regain the lead for good, setting the stage for the decisive late run.

The victory marked a successful start to the conference slate for Ohio State, which had suffered a narrow one-point loss to North Carolina in its previous major test. For Rutgers, the loss continued a pattern of struggling against high-major competition, having previously fallen to Michigan, Purdue, Seton Hall and Tennessee this season.

Ohio State next hosts Nebraska on Monday. Rutgers continues its challenging early conference schedule, welcoming Oregon to Piscataway also on Monday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Ohio State had a 58.8% probability to win pregame. The Buckeyes covered the spread as 9.5-point favorites, and the total score of 153 surpassed the over/under line of 147.5.
