Aztecs Pull Away From Spartans in Second Half for Mountain West Road Win
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a singular, spectacular offensive performance, the San Jose State Spartans found themselves overmatched by the collective depth and defensive pressure of the San Diego State Aztecs, who secured an 81-68 victory in a Mountain West Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Event Center.
Despite a heroic, career-high 30-point effort from San Jose State guard Colby Garland, the Aztecs methodically built and maintained a double-digit lead for much of the contest, never letting the Spartans mount a sustained threat after halftime. A crowd of 3,585 watched as San Diego State improved to 8-4 overall, while San Jose State fell to 5-8.
The most pivotal sequence of the game arrived late in the first half, effectively dousing San Jose State’s early momentum. The Spartans, fueled by Garland’s 13 first-half points and active interior play from Yaphet Moundi, had hung tough and trailed just 31-26 with under six minutes remaining before the break. The Aztecs, however, closed the half on an 11-7 run, capped by a BJ Davis three-pointer with 33 seconds left, to take a 42-38 lead into the locker room. That cushion proved critical, as San Jose State would never again pull within a single possession.
San Diego State’s defense tightened its grip after halftime, holding the Spartans to 30 points in the second half on a series of contested shots. The Aztecs consistently answered any modest San Jose State push with timely baskets, often in transition following one of their 11 steals. A key stretch early in the second half saw the Aztecs extend their lead to 53-45, and they would keep the advantage between 8 and 15 points for the remainder of the game.
While Garland was the game’s most prolific scorer, the Aztecs showcased a balanced and efficient attack. Davis, a guard from Modesto, provided a crucial offensive spark off the bench, scoring 18 points in just 20 minutes. Forward Miles Byrd added 11 points, two assists, and two steals, while Reese Dixon-Waters and Pharaoh Compton each chipped in 10 points. Compton also contributed a block and several key rebounds.
San Jose State struggled to find consistent scoring beyond Garland. Melvin Bell finished with 13 points, but the Spartans shot poorly from the floor overall and were hampered by 17 turnovers, which San Diego State converted into 19 points. The Aztecs also dominated in the paint, outscoring San Jose State 42-26 inside.
The victory continues a positive trend for San Diego State, which has now won four of its last five games following a two-game skid in late November. The Aztecs open the bulk of their Mountain West schedule at home against Boise State on Saturday. San Jose State, which has lost three of its last four, faces a tough road test at Utah State to begin conference play on the same day.
According to pregame analytics, San Diego State was projected with an 85.5% probability to win and entered as an 11-point favorite. The combined score of 149 points fell under the betting over/under line of 143.5.
