Villanova Edges Seton Hall in Defensive Big East Clash

NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle that typified the early Big East Conference season, the Villanova Wildcats used a decisive second-half surge to defeat the Seton Hall Pirates 64-56 on Tuesday night at Prudential Center.

The game, played before a crowd of 11,153, was defined by offensive inefficiency and physical play. Villanova improved to 10-2 overall and secured a crucial early conference victory, while Seton Hall, also starting the night with just one loss, fell to 11-2.

The most critical sequence of the contest came early in the second half, transforming a narrow Villanova lead into a commanding advantage from which Seton Hall could not recover. Leading 31-27 at halftime, the Wildcats opened the second period with a 13-2 run over the first six minutes, pushing their lead to 44-29 and seizing control of the game’s tempo.

That run was fueled by stifling defense and timely scoring. Acaden Lewis, who finished with 16 points, ignited the burst with a 3-pointer. Duke Brennan, who added 10 points, converted an offensive rebound, and Matthew Hodge capped the run with a tip-in. During this stretch, Seton Hall’s offensive struggles reached their peak, managing just a single field goal while committing multiple turnovers against a tightened Villanova defense.

Seton Hall’s offense never found a consistent rhythm, shooting a frigid 21 for 63 from the field, a rate of 33.3%. The Pirates were particularly hampered from beyond the arc, making only 3 of 13 attempts. Villanova was not markedly more efficient but was more effective, shooting 48.9% on 22-of-45 shooting and connecting on 10 of 23 from 3-point range.

Bryce Lindsay led all scorers with 15 points for Villanova, while Lewis’s 16 came on a mix of drives and outside shots. For Seton Hall, Elijah Fisher paced the offense with 13 points, and Josh Rivera provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, but the Pirates’ primary scorers were contained by Villanova’s defensive scheme.

The statistical ledger underscored the defensive nature of the game. Villanova committed 14 turnovers to Seton Hall’s seven, and the Pirates won the battle on the offensive glass 13-8. However, Villanova’s ability to generate higher-quality shots and capitalize on Seton Hall’s misses proved the difference. The Wildcats posted an offensive rating of 109.2 points per 100 possessions, significantly better than Seton Hall’s mark of 86.7.

Seton Hall made several pushes to cut into the deficit in the latter stages. A 7-0 run late in the second half, highlighted by an AJ Staton-McCray 3-pointer and a Josh Rivera layup, brought the Pirates within 52-44 with just over four minutes remaining. Each time, however, Villanova answered. Following that spurt, Bryce Lindsay immediately responded with a driving layup to halt the momentum and push the lead back to 10.

The Pirates’ final attempt came in the closing seconds, as Elijah Fisher scored on consecutive layups in the final 17 seconds to trim the final margin to eight, but the outcome had long been decided.

Villanova’s victory marked a resilient response after a tough road loss at Michigan in its previous outing and continued a strong start to the season. Seton Hall saw its six-game winning streak snapped and will look to regroup quickly as conference play intensifies.

Both teams face quick turnarounds in Big East action. Villanova hosts DePaul on New Year’s Eve, while Seton Hall travels to face Marquette next Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch at Villanova on Feb. 4.
