Tyson Powers Minnesota to Lopsided Victory Over Texas Southern

MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Cade Tyson scored a game-high 38 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Minnesota to a dominant 89-53 victory over Texas Southern in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at Williams Arena.

The Golden Gophers, improving to 6-5, never trailed and used a decisive first-half run to bury the visiting Tigers, who fell to 1-7. Minnesota’s offensive efficiency was the story, as it scored 89 points on just 70 possessions for a stellar offensive rating of 127.4, while Texas Southern managed only 76.6 points per 100 possessions.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the first half, turning a competitive opening into a lopsided affair. After Texas Southern’s Anthony Andrews hit a pull-up jumper to cut Minnesota’s lead to 10-7 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the half, the Golden Gophers seized complete control. They embarked on a 17-3 run over the next four and a half minutes, fueled by defensive pressure and hot shooting.

The surge began with a three-pointer from Cade Tyson, assisted by Isaac Asuma. Following a Texas Southern turnover, Jaylen Crocker-Johnson connected from beyond the arc. After another Tigers miscue, Tyson struck again from deep. The run was punctuated by transition opportunities created by Minnesota’s active defense, which forced five first-half turnovers that led to 24 points for the game. By the time Bobby Durkin found Crocker-Johnson for a layup with 8:22 left, Minnesota had opened a 29-10 advantage, effectively deciding the contest before the midway point of the first period.

Minnesota took a 45-25 lead into halftime and cruised through the second half, extending the margin to as many as 36 points. The Golden Gophers’ defensive intensity never relented, finishing with 12 steals and forcing 15 total turnovers. They also dominated the fast break, outscoring Texas Southern 21-4 in transition.

Tyson, a 6-foot-7 guard from Monroe, North Carolina, was spectacular, hitting six three-pointers and going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line in 37 minutes. His backcourt mate, Isaac Asuma of Cherry, Minnesota, added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Langston Reynolds facilitated the offense with 10 assists to go with seven rebounds. Crocker-Johnson contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, while Durkin chipped in 12 points.

Texas Southern struggled mightily from the field, shooting just 35.8 percent overall and a frigid 16.7 percent from three-point range. The Tigers were led by Alex Anderson, who came off the bench to score 11 points. Bryce Roberts added 10 points. Texas Southern’s leading scorer, Duane Posey, was limited to seven points in just 11 minutes of action.

Minnesota shot 49.1 percent from the field and a robust 44.1 percent from three-point range, making 15 shots from beyond the arc. The Golden Gophers also outrebounded the Tigers 38-30 and dished out 12 assists to Texas Southern’s five.

A crowd of 8,254 at Williams Arena watched the Golden Gophers snap a two-game losing streak. Texas Southern, which has faced a difficult early-season schedule with road games against power conference opponents, continued its struggles away from home.

Minnesota next hosts Campbell on Dec. 21. Texas Southern travels to face North Carolina State on Wednesday.
