Seton Hall Routs Rutgers in Garden State Rivalry Showdown
NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, the Seton Hall Pirates overwhelmed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 81-59 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday night at a sold-out Prudential Center.
The contest, played before a crowd of 11,153, was effectively decided in a blistering opening sequence. Seton Hall, improving to 10-1, unleashed a full-court defensive onslaught that Rutgers, now 5-6, could not withstand. The Pirates forced three consecutive turnovers by Rutgers guard Tariq Francis in the game’s first 90 seconds, converting each into fast-break layups to sprint to a 6-0 lead before the first media timeout.
That opening salvo set the tone for a half defined by Seton Hall’s disruptive defense. The Pirates recorded 13 steals for the game, with many leading directly to uncontested baskets. Rutgers committed 18 total turnovers, which Seton Hall parlayed into 28 points. Offensively, the Pirates were ruthlessly efficient, shooting 54.8% from the field (34 of 62) and posting an offensive rating of 121.4 points per 100 possessions. Rutgers, by contrast, managed only 35.8% shooting and an offensive rating of 86.2.
The most important stretch of the game was undoubtedly that opening burst, which allowed Seton Hall to establish immediate control. The Pirates never trailed and built a 35-21 halftime advantage. Rutgers showed brief signs of life early in the second half, trimming the deficit to 11 points, but Seton Hall responded with a 12-4 run to push the lead to 19 and extinguish any hope of a comeback.
Seton Hall’s backcourt duo of Adam Clark and AJ Staton-McCray orchestrated the victory. Clark, a 5-foot-10 guard from Philadelphia, scored 16 points and dished out seven assists, while his backcourt mate Staton-McCray, a 6-foot-4 guard from Delray Beach, Florida, led all scorers with 18 points. Their combined defensive intensity at the point of attack fueled the Pirates’ transition game.
The Pirates also dominated the interior, outscoring Rutgers 52-26 in the paint and blocking seven shots. Center Najai Hines of Plainfield, New Jersey, was a force with 10 points and four blocks in just 22 minutes. Forward Elijah Fisher from Toronto added 10 points and three assists.
Rutgers was led by forward Harun Zrno of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, who scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Guard Angelino Mark from Chatsworth, California, provided a spark off the bench with 10 points. The Scarlet Knights struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Seton Hall’s swarming defense, finishing with only eight assists.
The victory extends Seton Hall’s strong start to the season ahead of a challenging Big East Conference slate. The Pirates’ only loss came in a narrow two-point game at Southern California. Rutgers, meanwhile, has now dropped three of its last four games, all by double-digit margins.
Seton Hall next travels to face Providence on Friday, Dec. 19. Rutgers returns home to host Penn on Saturday, Dec. 20.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Seton Hall entered with a 62.5% probability to win. The Pirates covered the pregame spread of -10.5, and the total score of 140 points went under the over/under line of 134.5.
