Saint Peter’s Dominates Niagara in Metro Atlantic Conference Matchup
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — In a game defined by suffocating defense and offensive futility, Saint Peter’s overwhelmed Niagara from the opening tip and never relented, cruising to a 71-43 victory in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at Yanitelli Center.
The Peacocks, improving to 4-4 overall, set the tone immediately with a defensive clinic, forcing the Purple Eagles into a nightmarish start. Niagara missed its first eight field goal attempts and committed five turnovers before finally scoring its first points on a pair of Justin Page free throws with 15:07 remaining in the first half. By that time, Saint Peter’s had already built a 10-0 lead, a margin that would only grow.
The most decisive stretch of the game was its inception. Saint Peter’s guards Bryce Eaton and Brent Bland ignited a 13-0 run to open the contest, with Eaton assisting on a Bland three-pointer just 19 seconds in and then sinking his own three less than a minute later. The Peacocks’ defensive pressure was relentless, generating five steals in the first five minutes and consistently disrupting Niagara’s offensive sets. The Purple Eagles did not make a field goal until a Landon Williams layup with 13:56 left in the half, by which point they trailed 12-2.
Niagara’s offensive struggles were profound and persistent. The Purple Eagles shot just 31.1% from the floor, making only 14 of 45 attempts. They were equally cold from beyond the arc, connecting on just 3 of 16 three-point attempts. Their 15 turnovers were converted into 19 points by a opportunistic Saint Peter’s squad that tallied 13 steals. Niagara’s offensive rating of 73.3 points per 100 possessions underscored a afternoon of complete offensive breakdown.
In stark contrast, Saint Peter’s operated with efficiency and balance. The Peacocks shot 47.3% from the field and 40% from three-point range, posting a robust offensive rating of 117.1. They shared the ball effectively, registering 13 assists on 26 made baskets, and dominated the glass with a 41-28 rebounding advantage, including 10 offensive rebounds.
Bryce Eaton, a guard from Detroit, orchestrated the Saint Peter’s attack with a game-high 14 points, six assists and four rebounds. His backcourt partner, Brent Bland of Wheatley Heights, N.Y., added 10 points. The Peacocks’ frontcourt provided a decisive edge, with Zaakir Williamson of Philadelphia pulling down nine rebounds and Lucas Scroggins of Woodbridge, Va., contributing six points and six rebounds. TJ Robinson of Paterson, N.J., provided a significant spark off the bench with 14 points and four rebounds.
Niagara, which fell to 2-7, was led by Josiah Sabino of Jacksonville, Fla., who posted eight points and nine rebounds. Justin Hawkins of Willingboro, N.J., was the only Purple Eagle to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. The team’s five total assists highlighted their inability to generate consistent offense against the Peacocks’ defensive scheme.
Saint Peter’s led 32-15 at halftime and extinguished any hope of a Niagara comeback early in the second half, extending the lead to 38-19 within the first four minutes. The Peacocks’ advantage ballooned to as many as 30 points in the final minutes before settling on the 28-point final margin.
The victory gave Saint Peter’s its second consecutive MAAC win following a Friday afternoon triumph over Canisius. Niagara, which has lost five of its last six games, continues to search for answers after being held under 55 points for the third time this season.
Saint Peter’s will travel to face Georgetown on Saturday. Niagara will look to regroup on the road at Morgan State, also on Saturday.
