Spartans Overwhelm Toreros Behind Dominant First Half
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half offensive explosion propelled San Jose State to a decisive 86-69 victory over San Diego in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday night at the Event Center.
The Spartans, improving to 4-5, seized control from the opening tip and never looked back, building a commanding 52-34 halftime lead. San Jose State shot a blistering 54.5% from the field in the opening period, led by a balanced and efficient attack that overwhelmed the Toreros.
The game’s most critical stretch came in the first ten minutes, where San Jose State established a tone of defensive pressure and offensive execution that San Diego could not counter. After a slow start for both teams, the Spartans ignited a 15-2 run, turning a narrow 6-4 edge into a 21-6 advantage. The run was fueled by active hands, leading to San Diego turnovers, and a series of scores from Jermaine Washington, Colby Garland and Yaphet Moundi. The Toreros, who shot just 32.4% for the game, went nearly five minutes without a field goal during the pivotal stretch, digging a hole from which they could not recover.
San Jose State’s offensive rating of 118.1 on 73 possessions underscored its efficiency, while San Diego managed just a 93.1 rating. The Spartans’ backcourt duo of Colby Garland and Jermaine Washington orchestrated the victory. Garland, a guard from Magnolia, Arkansas, led all scorers with 20 points and added five assists in 37 minutes. Washington, from Hemet, California, contributed 17 points and six assists.
The Spartans’ frontcourt provided a significant advantage, with forward Adrian Myers of Stephens City, Virginia, adding 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and forward Yaphet Moundi of Paris, France, controlling the paint with 18 points, two assists and a block. San Jose State outscored San Diego 42-26 in the paint and outrebounded them 41-35.
San Diego, which fell to 3-5, was led by Tim Moore’s 17 points off the bench. The Toreros struggled mightily from beyond the arc, connecting on only 10 of 39 three-point attempts. While they forced 19 San Jose State turnovers and collected eight steals, their own offensive woes—including 10 turnovers and a 23-for-71 shooting performance—prevented any sustained comeback attempt.
The Toreros showed more fight in the second half, matching the Spartans 35-34, but the 18-point halftime deficit proved insurmountable. Adrian McIntyre added nine points for San Diego.
The game drew an attendance of 1,964 to the Event Center. San Jose State will look to build on the win when it hosts Long Beach State on Tuesday. San Diego returns home to face Southern California the same night.
The final combined score of 155 points went under the pregame over/under line of 143.5. San Jose State covered the pregame spread as a 6.5-point favorite.
