ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Elon Phoenix look to continue their strong start to the season when they host the struggling Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Saturday at Schar Center.

Elon (2-1) is coming off a high-scoring 96-89 road loss to Marshall on Wednesday. In that game, Chandler Cuthrell led the Phoenix with 28 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Randall Pettus added 17 points and five rebounds. The Phoenix opened the season with a 99-51 rout of Belmont Abbey and an overtime win at UNC Greensboro.

Gardner-Webb (0-3) is still searching for its first win after a 92-81 home loss to Division II North Greenville on Monday. Jacob Hudson, Julius Clark and Jacob Hogarth each scored 15 points in the defeat. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season began with lopsided road losses at Minnesota and Clemson.

The game marks the start of a challenging stretch for Elon, which travels to Miami (Fla.) next. Gardner-Webb continues a season-opening, seven-game road trip with a visit to DePaul on Tuesday.
