Northern Colorado Routs Colo. Christian in Home Opener

GREELEY, Colo. (Interstat) — The Northern Colorado Bears put on an offensive clinic Friday night, overwhelming non-divisional opponent Colorado Christian from the opening tip and cruising to a decisive 101-65 victory at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.

In a display of efficient and explosive scoring, the Bears improved their early-season record to 2-0, having now won both of their games by margins of 34 points or more. The 1,430 fans in attendance witnessed a Northern Colorado team that operated with precision, particularly from beyond the arc, where they connected on 18 three-pointers.

The game was never in doubt as the Bears established a commanding 48-27 lead by halftime. The offensive barrage continued unabated in the second half, with Northern Colorado adding another 53 points to their total while Colorado Christian managed 38. The Bears finished the night with an astounding offensive rating of 149.4, scoring 101 points from just 68 possessions, a testament to their shot-making and ability to limit empty trips down the floor.

Northern Colorado’s attack was a balanced and potent effort, with six players scoring in double figures. The backcourt duo of Zach Bloch and Brock Wisne led the charge. Bloch, a guard from Lawrence, Kansas, was the game’s high scorer, pouring in 24 points in just 21 minutes of action. Wisne, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward from Thornton, Colorado, was a force inside and out, contributing 18 points, four rebounds and four assists in his 21 minutes.

The Bears’ ball movement was key to breaking down the Colorado Christian defense, and guard Quinn Denker of San Jose, California, was the primary catalyst. Denker orchestrated the offense masterfully, dishing out 10 assists while also chipping in six points, five rebounds and a block. His playmaking set the table for the team’s prolific outside shooting.

Northern Colorado shot 54 percent from the floor, converting 35 of their 65 field goal attempts. Their success from three-point range was the defining characteristic of the game, as they hit 18 of 42 attempts from deep, a 43 percent clip. They were also efficient from the free throw line, making 13 of 16 attempts.

The Bears also dominated the glass, particularly on the offensive end, where they hauled in 16 rebounds to create second-chance opportunities. Defensively, they were active, recording nine steals and two blocks while committing only 11 turnovers.

Beyond the top scorers, several other Bears made significant contributions. Ring Nyeri, a 6-foot-8 forward from Peoria, Arizona, provided a strong presence with 14 points and six rebounds. Ibu Yamazaki of Matsudo, Japan, added 11 points and four rebounds, while Ariik Mawien of Anoka, Minnesota, finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

For Colorado Christian, the loss was a difficult start to their campaign. They were led by Bobby McWard, who scored 13 points, and Joshua Reid, who added 11. Andrew Reichart and Lincoln Cantrall contributed nine and eight points, respectively, but the Cougars could not find an answer for Northern Colorado’s relentless offensive pressure.

This victory continues a strong opening to the season for Northern Colorado under head coach Steve Smiley. In their previous game on Monday, they also defeated Colorado College by a wide margin, 91-57. The team appears to be building strong momentum as they prepare for a more challenging stretch of their schedule.

The Bears will now hit the road for their next contest, a matchup against Pepperdine in Malibu, California, on Saturday, Nov. 15. That game begins a string of contests away from Greeley, including a multi-team event in Portland, Oregon, and a high-profile non-conference road game at Texas Tech in mid-December.

The team will not return to the Butler-Hancock Athletic Center until Friday, Nov. 21, when they face Saint Thomas (Minn.) in a game that will be played at a neutral site in Portland. Their next true home game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29, against Regis.

Based on their first two outings, the Northern Colorado Bears have demonstrated an offensive firepower that will make them a formidable opponent as they progress through the non-conference slate and into Big Sky Conference play. The cohesive, high-scoring performance against Colorado Christian serves as a clear statement of intent for the season ahead.
