Southern Illinois Routs UMKC in High-Scoring Affair
CARBONDALE, Ill. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive pressure, the Southern Illinois Salukis overwhelmed the visiting Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 101 to 78 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night before a crowd of 3,704 at SIU Arena.
The Salukis improved to 2 wins and 0 losses on the young season, while the Kangaroos evened their record at 1 win and 1 loss.
From the opening tip, Southern Illinois established a pace that UMKC struggled to match. The Salukis built a 48 to 34 lead by halftime and did not relent after the break, outscoring the Kangaroos 53 to 44 in the second half to secure the decisive victory.
The game was defined by Southern Illinois’s dominance in the paint and in transition. The Salukis outscored UMKC 64 to 38 in the paint and capitalized on a blistering fastbreak attack, outscoring the Kangaroos 24 to 2 on the run. Southern Illinois also converted Kangaroo mistakes into 21 points off turnovers, nearly doubling UMKC’s output of 9 points in that category.
Karmello Branch led the scoring effort for Missouri-Kansas City. The 6-foot-4 guard from Tampa, Florida, poured in 18 points and dished out 2 assists in 24 minutes of action. He was supported by Jayson Petty, a 6-foot-4 guard from Phoenix, Arizona, who added 14 points in 22 minutes. Shatner Booker-Lowery, a 6-foot-7 player from Orlando, Florida, also reached double figures with 10 points off the bench.
Southern Illinois showcased a balanced and efficient offensive attack. Davion Sykes, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound force from Duncanville, Texas, was a model of efficiency, scoring 14 points in just 15 minutes. Rolyns Aligbe, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward from Minneapolis, Minnesota, matched Sykes’s 14-point total while adding a significant presence on the glass in his 19 minutes.
The Salukis’ backcourt also made key contributions. Damien Mayo Jr., a 6-foot-3 guard from St. Louis, Missouri, filled the stat sheet with 6 points, 5 assists, and a blocked shot in 23 minutes. Jorge Moreno, a 6-foot-11 center from Cananea, Mexico, provided a strong interior presence, scoring 9 points in 11 minutes.
The contest began with a sloppy opening minute featuring turnovers from both sides, but Southern Illinois quickly found its rhythm. After an early three-pointer from UMKC’s Branch, the Salukis began to methodically build their lead, leveraging their size and speed to create high-percentage shots. A late first-half surge, capped by a Damien Mayo Jr. layup with under a minute remaining, gave the home team a comfortable 14-point cushion at the intermission.
Any hopes of a Kangaroo comeback were swiftly extinguished in the second half as Southern Illinois continued to attack the basket and convert defensive stops into easy scoring opportunities. The Salukis’ lead ballooned, and they cruised to the 23-point victory, surpassing the century mark on a Damien Mayo Jr. three-pointer in the final seconds.
The Kangaroos will look to rebound when they host Iona on Tuesday, November 11. The Salukis hit the road for their next contest, facing North Dakota State on Monday, November 17.
