Ohio State’s Torrid Shooting Sinks Purdue Fort Wayne in Home Opener
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — Bruce Thornton scored a game-high 38 points to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to a dominant 94-68 victory over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Value City Arena.
A crowd of 8,926 watched the Buckeyes improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Mastodons fell to 0-2.
Thornton, a 6-foot-2 guard from Fairburn, Georgia, was nearly unstoppable, efficiently carving up the Purdue Fort Wayne defense throughout his 35 minutes on the court. His backcourt partner, John Mobley, provided ample support, adding 19 points. The duo’s offensive firepower proved too much for the visiting Mastodons to contain.
Ohio State seized control of the game early, using a combination of sharp outside shooting and disciplined execution to build a double-digit lead in the first half. The Buckeyes took a 45-30 advantage into the locker room at halftime and never looked back, extending their lead after the break and cruising to the comfortable win.
While Purdue Fort Wayne managed to outscore Ohio State in the paint, 40-34, and held a slight 6-0 edge in fastbreak points, the Buckeyes’ offensive efficiency was the defining story. Ohio State also capitalized on Mastodons’ mistakes, scoring 18 points off turnovers.
Purdue Fort Wayne was led by Mikale Stevenson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Fort Wayne, Indiana, who poured in 21 points. DeAndre Craig, a guard from Chicago, added 18 points for the Mastodons. Darius Duffy, a 6-foot-8 forward from Murray, Kentucky, contributed 10 points and two blocked shots in the losing effort.
Beyond the stellar guard play of Thornton and Mobley, Ohio State received a significant contribution from its frontcourt. Christoph Tilly, a 7-foot center from Berlin, Germany, recorded 15 points, while Amare Bynum, a 6-foot-8 forward from Omaha, Nebraska, chipped in nine points. The Buckeyes’ balanced attack overwhelmed a Purdue Fort Wayne team that struggled to find consistent stops.
The game’s outcome was largely in line with pregame expectations. Interstat’s ELO system had given Ohio State a 94.5 percent probability to win, and the Buckeyes easily covered the pregame spread where they were favored by 21.5 points. The combined score of 162 points fell just short of the over/under line of 163.5.
For Ohio State, the victory continues a strong start to the season after they opened with a 118-102 win over IU Indy on Monday. The Mastodons, meanwhile, were looking to rebound from a 90-71 road loss at Grand Canyon to begin their campaign.
Looking ahead, Ohio State will continue its homestand when it hosts Appalachian State on Tuesday. Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action quickly, hosting Dominican on Sunday before hitting the road again for a game at Western Michigan on Wednesday.
The Buckeyes’ upcoming schedule features several high-profile matchups, including a home game against Notre Dame on November 16 and a challenging stretch of road games at Pittsburgh, Northwestern, West Virginia and North Carolina in December.
Purdue Fort Wayne’s next ten games include a mix of home contests and a difficult road trip to Utah and Saint Louis later this month as they seek their first win of the season.
The performance from Thornton, however, will be the major takeaway from this contest. His 38-point outburst signals that the Buckeyes’ lead guard is in mid-season form, providing a potent offensive engine for a team with clear aspirations for the postseason. For Purdue Fort Wayne, the search for defensive answers continues as they prepare for the grind of their Horizon League schedule after this early non-conference test against a power conference opponent.
