Retrievers Dominate Highlanders in America East Conference Rout
NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — The Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers delivered a commanding wire-to-wire performance, overwhelming the NJIT Highlanders 91-52 in an America East Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Retrievers, now 21-8 overall, seized control from the opening tip and never relented, building a 22-point halftime lead and extending it throughout the second half. The Highlanders, who fell to 15-16, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a relentless UMBC defense.
The most decisive stretch of the game came early in the first half, setting a tone of defensive dominance for the visitors. After NJIT’s Ari Fulton opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, UMBC’s defense clamped down, forcing turnovers on three consecutive Highlanders possessions. The Retrievers converted those miscues into a quick 5-0 run, highlighted by a steal and a 3-pointer from Jose Roberto Tanchyn, assisted by Ace Valentine. This early sequence established UMBC’s aggressive, disruptive defensive identity, which would plague NJIT all evening. The Highlanders managed just five points over the game’s first seven minutes as the Retrievers built a double-digit lead they would never surrender.
UMBC’s offensive efficiency was stark, scoring 91 points on just 69 possessions for an elite offensive rating of 131.7. They shot 50.8% from the field and 44.4% from 3-point range. In contrast, NJIT’s offensive rating was a meager 73.2, as they shot 32.1% overall and a frigid 15.4% from beyond the arc. The Retrievers also dominated the glass with a 16-9 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to numerous second-chance opportunities.
The Retrievers’ attack was balanced, with five players scoring in double figures. DJ Armstrong led the way with 14 points, while Jah’Likai King, Jose Roberto Tanchyn, and Riley Jacobs each added 10. Ace Valentine orchestrated the offense with a team-high six assists to go with eight points. The UMBC bench contributed 30 points, led by Jacobs and Cougar Downing, who had seven.
NJIT was led by Sebastian Robinson’s 10 points. David Bolden and Melvyn Ebonkoli each scored seven, but the Highlanders committed 16 turnovers against 13 UMBC steals, which the Retrievers converted into 21 points.
The game was effectively decided by halftime, with UMBC leading 46-24. The Retrievers continued to apply pressure in the second half, stretching the lead past 30 points and allowing for extensive use of their bench. The 39-point margin of victory represents UMBC’s most lopsided conference win this season.
With the victory, UMBC solidified its position near the top of the America East standings heading into the final stretch of the regular season. NJIT will look to regroup in its regular-season finale as it aims to secure a spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
The announced attendance was 460.
