William & Mary Holds Off Hampton in High-Scoring Colonial Affair

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — In a high-octane Colonial Athletic Association clash that saw 15 lead changes and neither team lead by more than nine points, William & Mary used a decisive second-half surge to pull away from Hampton for a 94-85 victory on Tuesday night at Kaplan Arena.

A crowd of 4,268 watched the Tribe improve to 19-11 overall and solidify its standing in the conference, while the Pirates fell to 13-18 in a game that was a stark contrast to their defensive-minded 77-74 win over William & Mary just under a month prior.

The contest was a showcase of individual offensive talent, particularly from the guard positions. Hampton’s Daniel Johnson, a 6-foot-5 junior from Chicago, kept the Pirates in striking distance with a game-high 23 points, including three 3-pointers. His backcourt mate, Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt, added 10 points and four assists. The Pirates’ interior presence was anchored by 7-foot London native Josh Ogundele, who muscled his way to 21 points.

William & Mary, however, countered with superior balance and a critical edge in transition. Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi, the 6-foot-7 sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden, led the Tribe with 17 points, four assists, and several key defensive rebounds. His frontcourt partner, German forward Kilian Brockhoff, matched his 17 points while adding three assists and two blocks, providing a steadying force in the paint.

The game’s pivotal sequence arrived just past the midway point of the second half. With William & Mary clinging to a 70-68 lead, the Tribe unleashed a 9-2 run over a two-minute span that ultimately broke the game open. The run was fueled by defensive stops and efficient offense. It began with a Kyle Pulliam layup, followed by a critical block from Brockhoff on the defensive end. On the ensuing possession, Reese Miller found Jhei-R Jones for a 3-pointer. After a Hampton turnover, Brockhoff assisted on a Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi layup, capping the run and pushing the Tribe’s lead to 79-70 with 6:33 remaining.

Hampton, which had fought back from a 10-point first-half deficit, could not mount another sustained challenge. The Pirates cut the lead to five points on several occasions, but each time William & Mary answered. Chase Lowe, who finished with 15 points, was instrumental in the closing minutes, attacking the rim for crucial baskets to stifle any final rally. Reese Miller added 13 points and three assists, and Kyle Pulliam chipped in 10 points and three assists for the Tribe.

The first half set the tone for the nail-biter, featuring eight ties and 10 lead changes. William & Mary built its largest lead at 30-21 after a Finn Lally hook shot and a Chase Lowe layup, but Hampton closed the period on a 20-11 run. A driving layup by Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt just before the halftime buzzer sent the Pirates to the locker room trailing by a manageable 51-46 score.

Hampton’s Xzavier Long was a constant factor, playing 38 minutes and contributing 13 points, two assists, a block, and a steal. The Pirates shot effectively but were undone by 15 turnovers, which William & Mary converted into 19 points. The Tribe also held a slight advantage in second-chance points and fast-break points, which proved decisive in the final margin.

The victory gives William & Mary momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season, while Hampton will look to regroup after a hard-fought road loss in a game that exceeded the pregame over/under line by a significant margin. The teams combined for 179 points in a contest that was projected to be far lower scoring.
