Preview: Colorado Buffaloes at Houston Cougars

HOUSTON (Interstat) — The surging Colorado Buffaloes will face a stern road test against the nationally prominent Houston Cougars in a Big 12 men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Colorado (16-12) enters on a two-game winning streak, most recently defeating Kansas State 79-70 on Wednesday. The Buffaloes have shown resilience but have struggled away from home, with recent road losses at BYU, Texas Tech and Baylor by an average of 22 points.

Houston (23-5), a contender for the conference title, looks to rebound after consecutive losses at Iowa State and Kansas, and at home to Arizona. The Cougars are 14-1 at home this season, with their only loss in Houston coming against the Wildcats last weekend.

The game features a compelling backcourt duel. Colorado is led by guard Isaiah Johnson, who is averaging 16.1 points and 4.1 assists over his last seven games. He scored 18 points and dished seven assists in the win over Kansas State.

Houston counters with guard Kingston Flemings, who has been a consistent force. He averaged 18.3 points over a recent three-game stretch, including a 22-point effort in the narrow loss at Iowa State.

For Colorado to pull an upset, it must solve its road woes and handle Houston’s trademark defensive pressure. The Cougars lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 56.2 points per game. The Buffaloes were held to 44 points in a road loss at Texas Tech earlier this month.

Houston aims to re-establish its defensive identity and home-court dominance before closing the regular season next week against Baylor and at Oklahoma State. Colorado continues a tough closing stretch, visiting Utah and hosting Arizona next week.

Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon. The Cougars won the first meeting this season, 81-65, in Boulder on Jan. 10.
