Fordham at VCU
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A pivotal Atlantic 10 Conference rematch awaits Saturday when the VCU Rams host the Fordham Rams at the Siegel Center.
Fordham (16-12, 9-6 A-10) arrives riding a four-game winning streak, its longest in conference play this season, following a 63-59 victory over Davidson last Saturday. VCU (21-7, 12-3), however, aims to rebound from a rare stumble, an 88-75 road loss at Saint Louis last Friday that snapped a five-game win streak.
The contest is a quick turnaround from a tightly played meeting just over three weeks ago. On Feb. 3 in the Bronx, VCU edged Fordham 63-59 in a defensive struggle. Fordham guard DeJour Reaves scored 21 points in that loss, part of a stellar recent run for the junior. Over his last eight games, Reaves is averaging 18.4 points, including a 24-point effort in a win over Loyola Chicago and a 21-point performance against Davidson.
VCU counters with its own backcourt standout in Brandon Jennings. The senior guard is coming off an 18-point outing in the loss to Saint Louis and provides steady defense and playmaking. His backcourt leadership will be crucial against Fordham’s surging backcourt.
The matchup features two of the league’s top defensive units, suggesting another low-possession, physical battle. Fordham’s resurgence has been keyed by improved late-game execution during its streak, while VCU remains among the A-10’s elite, boasting a potent offense that averages 78.6 points per game.
A victory would bolster VCU’s position near the top of the conference standings and strengthen its NCAA tournament resume. For Fordham, a road win against a league heavyweight would mark its most significant victory of the season and solidify its momentum heading into the final week of the regular season.
Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 28.
