Wildcats Edge Bobcats in Overtime Thriller
OGDEN, Utah (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless runs and critical defensive stands, Weber State outlasted Montana State 82-79 in overtime Thursday night in a pivotal Big Sky Conference men’s basketball clash at Dee Events Center.
The Wildcats, who improved to .500 at 14-14 overall, secured the victory by scoring the final five points of the extra period after the Bobcats had erased a late deficit to force overtime. The win avenged a three-point home loss to Montana State just four weeks prior and dealt a blow to the Bobcats’ conference standing, dropping them to 15-12.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute of regulation and the opening moments of overtime, a microcosm of the night’s tense, back-and-forth battle. With Weber State clinging to a 67-66 lead and 44 seconds left in the second half, Montana State’s Jed Miller connected on a clutch jump shot to put the Bobcats ahead by one. Weber State’s Trevor Hennig was then fouled and split a pair of free throws with 44 seconds remaining, tying the game at 67.
Montana State had a chance to win it in regulation. Following a timeout, Miller’s potential game-winning 3-pointer was blocked by Weber State’s Nigel Burris with 25 seconds left. The Wildcats secured the rebound and called timeout to set up a final play. Hennig’s driving attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark, but he grabbed his own miss and put up another shot that also failed to fall, sending the game to an extra period tied.
Weber State seized immediate control in overtime. The Wildcats scored the first six points, keyed by a driving layup from Tijan Saine and two baskets from Edwin Suarez, to build a 73-67 lead. Montana State, demonstrating the resilience they showed all night, answered with a 9-3 run. A 3-pointer from Miller and a dramatic, off-balance triple from Christian King with just three seconds left in overtime tied the game at 79.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Weber State’s Viljami Vartiainen intercepted a pass near midcourt. He was fouled and calmly sank both free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining to put the Wildcats up 81-79. Montana State’s last-ditch attempt resulted in another turnover, and Saine added a final free throw for the final margin.
The game was a statistical contrast in styles. Weber State dominated the interior, outscoring Montana State 48-36 in the paint and grabbing 14 offensive rebounds to the Bobcats’ five. That effort helped offset a poor shooting night from beyond the arc, where the Wildcats made only 4 of 17 attempts. Montana State was more efficient from the field, shooting 50% overall, but managed only 7-of-24 from 3-point range and were hampered by 12 turnovers, which Weber State converted into 15 fast-break points.
Trevor Hennig led all scorers for Weber State with 19 points, while Nigel Burris added 15 and a game-high three steals. Tijan Saine provided a crucial all-around performance with 14 points, five assists and three steals. Edwin Suarez was instrumental off the bench, contributing 10 points, three assists and three steals, including several key plays in the second half and overtime.
Montana State was led by a balanced attack. Jeremiah Davis scored 17 points, Patrick McMahon also had 17, and Jed Miller filled the stat sheet with 16 points, five assists and eight rebounds in a game-high 42 minutes. Jaden Steppe added 15 points and two blocks for the Bobcats.
The first half set the tone for a tight contest, with Montana State taking a narrow 29-28 lead into the break. The second half saw seven lead changes and five ties as neither team could build a substantial advantage. Weber State’s largest lead was seven points early in the second half, while Montana State’s biggest cushion was just four points in the opening period.
The game, played before a crowd of 4,011, had significant implications in the Big Sky standings. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Montana State, which had defeated rival Montana in its previous outing. Weber State, which had lost four of its last five, stopped the skid and regained momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
According to the pregame analytics from Interstat’s ELO system, Montana State was projected with a 63.3% probability to win. The combined point total of 161 surpassed the over/under line of 150.5.
Montana State travels to face Idaho State on Saturday. Weber State remains at home to host Montana, also on Saturday.
