CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a tense Ohio Valley Conference clash that came down to the final possession, George Marshall scored 23 points to lead Morehead State to a narrow 73-70 victory over Eastern Illinois on Thursday night at Lantz Arena.
The Eagles, who led by just a single point at halftime, improved to 16-12 overall and completed a regular-season sweep of the Panthers. Eastern Illinois fell to 11-17.
The game’s defining sequence unfolded in the frantic final minute. With Morehead State clinging to a 67-65 lead, Eastern Illinois’s Zion Fruster tied the game on a driving jump shot with 27 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Morehead State’s George Marshall was fouled and sent to the line with 19 seconds left. He made the first free throw but missed the second, keeping the Eagles’ lead at a precarious 68-67.
Eastern Illinois secured the rebound and called timeout to set up a potential game-winning play. Out of the break, Fruster found Markus Blackwell open on the left wing, and the guard from Detroit sank a clutch 3-pointer, sending the home crowd of 1,818 into a frenzy and giving the Panthers a 70-68 lead with just eight seconds on the clock.
Morehead State, with no timeouts remaining, pushed the ball upcourt. Chase Dawson was fouled hard by Fruster on a drive with seven seconds left, sending him to the line for two shots. Dawson calmly sank both free throws to knot the score at 70-70.
Eastern Illinois inbounded the ball quickly to Fruster, who raced up the right side. Under pressure, his off-balance 3-point attempt from the wing missed everything with three seconds left. Morehead State’s Davion Cunningham secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled by Fruster with one second remaining.
Cunningham, who finished with 19 points, missed the first free throw but made the second to put the Eagles ahead 71-70. After an Eastern Illinois timeout, the Panthers’ long inbound pass was deflected, and Cunningham was fouled again with a fraction of a second left. He made both free throws to provide the final margin.
The frantic finish capped a game defined by runs and resilience. Morehead State built an early 11-point lead in the first half, but Eastern Illinois closed the period on a 7-0 spurt to trim the deficit to 29-28 at the break. The Panthers carried that momentum into the second half, taking a brief lead before the Eagles responded with a series of key baskets from Marshall and Cunningham to regain control.
Marshall, a 6-foot-4 guard from Jackson, Mississippi, was the offensive catalyst for Morehead State, adding two assists in 31 minutes. Cunningham, a 6-3 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, complemented him with four assists and a block. Jon Carroll added nine points for the Eagles.
Eastern Illinois was led by Fruster, who tallied 18 points and five assists in 38 minutes. Meechie White contributed 13 points and six assists, while Kooper Jacobi added 12 points. Nazareth Fisher chipped in 11 points and two blocks for the Panthers.
