Western Carolina Topples UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference Matchup
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a high-octane Southern Conference clash defined by offensive efficiency and a standout duel between two prolific scorers, the Western Carolina Catamounts avenged a narrow loss from two weeks prior by defeating the UNC Greensboro Spartans 91-77 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at Ramsey Center.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded late in the first half, transforming a tight contest into a lead the Catamounts would never relinquish. With UNC Greensboro trailing 28-25 and just over eight minutes remaining before halftime, the Spartans committed turnovers on three consecutive possessions. Western Carolina capitalized ruthlessly, with Cord Stansberry converting a driving layup before Tahlan Pettway buried a deep 3-pointer. The sudden 5-0 spurt forced a Spartans timeout and ignited a 17-5 run that gave the Catamounts a 45-36 lead at the intermission.
Western Carolina’s offensive execution was the story of the night. The Catamounts shot 52.5% from the field and an impressive 46.2% from 3-point range, posting an offensive rating of 125.6 points per 100 possessions. They consistently answered every Spartans push in the second half, maintaining a double-digit cushion for nearly the entire final period. UNC Greensboro, despite shooting a respectable 51.9% themselves, could not match the Catamounts’ firepower from beyond the arc or their ability to convert free throws, where Western Carolina made 17 of 22 attempts.
The individual battle between Western Carolina’s Tahlan Pettway and UNC Greensboro’s Justin Neely was spectacular. Pettway, the Catamounts’ top star, led his team with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, and added three assists in 38 minutes. His backcourt mate, Cord Stansberry, was equally formidable, scoring 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Marcus Kell provided crucial interior support with 15 points, while Tidjiane Dioumassi added 16.
Neely was magnificent in defeat for the Spartans. The junior from Miami Beach, Florida, poured in a game-high 35 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the floor, adding four assists. He relentlessly attacked the basket, scoring 28 of his points in the paint. Noah Norgaard supported him with 13 points, and Clinton Efinda chipped in 11. However, the Spartans’ offense often stagnated, evidenced by only five total assists, and they were outrebounded 31-24.
The victory improved Western Carolina’s season record to 11-15 overall. The Catamounts, who had lost 81-78 at UNC Greensboro on Feb. 4, evened the season series and moved to 5-8 in Southern Conference play. UNC Greensboro fell to 12-16 overall and 6-7 in the league.
Western Carolina set the tone early, opening the game with a 3-pointer from Stansberry and building an initial lead. While Neely kept the Spartans close with 18 first-half points, the Catamounts’ late-half surge proved insurmountable. Every time UNC Greensboro trimmed the deficit to 10 or 11 points in the second half, Western Carolina responded with a timely basket, often a 3-pointer from Pettway or Stansberry, to quell the rally.
The Catamounts also won the hustle categories, recording eight steals and seven offensive rebounds to the Spartans’ five and four, respectively. Both teams committed a similar number of turnovers, but Western Carolina’s superior shooting made the difference before an announced crowd of 1,692.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Western Carolina entered the game with a narrow 50.6% probability to win, a forecast they decisively exceeded with their performance.
UNC Greensboro will look to rebound at home against East Tennessee State on Saturday. Western Carolina hits the road for its next contest, facing Virginia Military Institute also on Saturday.
