Navy Routs Lehigh in Patriot League Men’s Basketball Showdown
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — The Navy Midshipmen, showcasing the form of a team with championship aspirations, delivered a commanding defensive performance to overwhelm the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 72-49 in a Patriot League men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
The victory, witnessed by 1,392 fans, solidified Navy’s position atop the conference standings, improving its record to 22-6 overall and 12-3 in league play. Lehigh, struggling to find any consistent offensive rhythm, fell to 12-16 and 6-9.
The most important part of the game was Navy’s immediate and sustained defensive pressure, which suffocated Lehigh from the opening tip and never relented. The Midshipmen set the tone in the game’s first 15 minutes, holding Lehigh to a mere nine points while building a double-digit lead that would only expand. Lehigh’s offensive struggles were profound and persistent; the Mountain Hawks shot just 33.3% from the field, connected on only 3 of 18 attempts from three-point range, and managed a season-low six assists against 11 turnovers. Navy’s defensive activity was reflected in 10 steals and five blocked shots, consistently turning Lehigh possessions into disjointed efforts against the shot clock.
Navy guard Austin Benigni, a junior from The Woodlands, Texas, was the orchestrator of both the offensive and defensive dominance. He scored a game-high 25 points, dished out seven assists, and piloted an attack that committed just 10 turnovers. His backcourt leadership ensured Navy capitalized on nearly every Lehigh mistake. Benigni’s backcourt mate, Jinwoo Kim of Overland Park, Kansas, added six points, while the frontcourt duo of Aidan Kehoe and Donovan Draper provided crucial energy. Kehoe, a 6-foot-10 sophomore from Montvale, New Jersey, posted 14 points and two blocks, controlling the paint. Draper, a sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida, contributed eight points, four assists, and was a disruptive force defensively.
Lehigh’s lone bright spot was the effort of guard Nasir Whitlock. The sophomore from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, fought for 20 points, but received little support as the Mountain Hawks’ offense frequently stalled. Senior forward Hank Alvey of Mapleton, Illinois, added eight points and five assists, while Montreal native Edouard Benoit chipped in nine points.
The game was effectively decided in the first half. After a brief 2-2 tie, Navy unleashed a 14-3 run, fueled by Benigni’s playmaking and relentless defense. Lehigh went scoreless for stretches exceeding four minutes on multiple occasions. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Navy led 32-20, and the Mountain Hawks had already committed eight turnovers and shot under 30% from the field.
Any hope of a Lehigh resurgence was extinguished early in the second half. Navy opened with a 10-4 spurt, pushing the lead to 18 points, and continued to apply pressure. The Midshipmen’s lead ballooned to as many as 23 points in the final minutes as both teams emptied their benches. The final margin reflected a comprehensive performance, with Navy outshooting, outrebounding, and outworking Lehigh in every facet.
The win extends Navy’s winning streak to four games and sets up a critical showdown with archrival Army on Saturday. The Midshipmen will look to carry this defensive intensity into that contest and their final push for the Patriot League regular-season title. Lehigh, meanwhile, must regroup quickly, with its next opportunity coming at home against American on Feb. 25. The Mountain Hawks’ offensive rating of 75.7 for the game underscored the depth of their struggles against a Navy defense operating at peak efficiency.
