Iowa State Edges Houston in Tight Big 12 Showdown

AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a heavyweight clash between two of the Big 12’s elite, Iowa State outlasted Houston 70-67 on Monday night at a raucous Hilton Coliseum, handing the Cougars their first true road loss of the season in a game that came down to the final possession.

The victory, forged by a balanced offensive attack and a critical defensive stand in the closing seconds, lifted both teams to identical 23-3 overall records and tightened the conference race with just over two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Houston, which entered the night leading the nation in defensive efficiency, found itself in an unfamiliar shootout. The Cyclones carved out a 43-40 halftime lead behind efficient first-half shooting and maintained that slim margin throughout a tense second half where neither team led by more than five points.

The game’s defining sequence came in the final 23 seconds with Iowa State clinging to a 69-67 lead. The Cyclones’ Joshua Jefferson drove to the basket, but his layup was emphatically swatted away by Houston’s Joseph Tugler, preserving the two-point margin and giving the Cougars a chance to tie or win. Out of a timeout, Houston worked the ball to Chris Cenac Jr., whose contested jumper from the left side missed with four seconds remaining.

Iowa State’s Blake Buchanan secured the crucial defensive rebound and was fouled. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Tamin Lipsey hustled to grab the offensive board for the Cyclones. Jefferson was then fouled on the ensuing inbounds play with one second left. He made the first free throw to extend the lead to three and intentionally missed the second, leaving Houston without enough time to attempt a tying shot.

The contest was a stark contrast in styles. Iowa State’s offense operated with precision, scoring 70 points on just 56 possessions for a stellar offensive rating of 124.0. They shot 49% from the field and 40.9% from three-point range, while dishing out 15 assists against only three turnovers. Houston, meanwhile, relied heavily on individual creation, finishing with a season-low two assists as a team. The Cougars shot 42.1% overall and a respectable 35.3% from deep, but their 111.2 offensive rating paled in comparison to the Cyclones’ efficiency.

Kingston Flemings led all scorers with 22 points for Houston, including several difficult pull-up jumpers to keep his team within striking distance. Emanuel Sharp added 16 points, all in the first half, and Milos Uzan chipped in 11 points and six assists.

Iowa State countered with a deep and balanced effort. Jefferson posted 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Nate Heise scored 11 points, all from beyond the arc or at the foul line, and Buchanan provided a vital interior presence with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Lipsey, the Cyclones’ floor general, filled the stat sheet with nine points, four assists, four steals and seven rebounds.

The first half set the tone for the night, featuring eight ties and seven lead changes. Sharp’s hot shooting from three-point range propelled Houston early, but Iowa State answered with a 13-2 run midway through the period, fueled by three-pointers from Jefferson and Killyan Toure, to take a lead they would never fully relinquish. The Cyclones led by as many as seven in the opening period before settling for a three-point halftime advantage.

The second half became a grueling, possession-by-possession battle. Houston tied the game twice but could never regain the lead. A three-pointer from Jamarion Batemon with 2:10 to play gave Iowa State a 66-63 cushion. Flemings answered with a tough jumper, but Heise responded with what proved to be the game’s biggest shot—a clutch three-pointer from the wing with 1:17 left to push the Cyclone lead back to four at 69-65.

Flemings again cut the deficit to two with another jumper, setting the stage for the frantic final minute and Iowa State’s game-sealing defensive stop.

The loss snapped Houston’s seven-game winning streak and dropped the Cougars to 10-1 in true road games this season. Iowa State improved to 15-0 at Hilton Coliseum this season and notched its fourth win over a top-10 opponent.

Both teams continue their pursuit of a Big 12 title with challenging road tests on Saturday. Houston returns home to face Arizona before traveling to face Kansas. Iowa State heads west for a two-game trip, starting at BYU.
