Saint Peter’s Holds Off Fairfield Rally Behind Robinson, Williamson
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first half and a frantic comeback attempt, Saint Peter’s used a blistering start and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to hold off Fairfield 83-74 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at Yanitelli Center.
The Peacocks built a 20-point halftime lead behind efficient offense and disruptive defense, then withstood a second-half surge led by Fairfield’s Declan Wucherpfennig to secure the victory before a crowd of 875.
Saint Peter’s set the tone immediately. Brent Bland opened the scoring with a 3-pointer just 40 seconds in, part of a 5-0 run to start the game. The Peacocks’ defense was equally impactful, forcing four Fairfield turnovers in the first four minutes and converting them into easy baskets. A 9-0 run midway through the half, capped by a TJ Robinson 3-pointer, extended the lead to 23-8. The Peacocks shot 50% from the field in the half and connected on 5 of 10 from beyond the arc, while Fairfield struggled to find any rhythm, committing 10 turnovers and shooting just 32%.
The most important part of the game was Saint Peter’s first-half performance, which established an insurmountable cushion. The Peacocks led by as many as 22 points before taking a 43-23 advantage into the break. Fairfield’s 23-point half was its second-lowest output of the season.
The Stags emerged from halftime a different team. Sparked by Wucherpfennig, they chipped away at the deficit with increased defensive pressure and more purposeful offense. A 12-4 run over a four-minute span cut the Saint Peter’s lead to 57-49 with just over 11 minutes remaining. Wucherpfennig was the catalyst, scoring 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, often attacking the rim and drawing fouls.
Every time Fairfield threatened, however, Saint Peter’s had an answer. When the Stags closed within eight, Zaakir Williamson converted a tough layup and Brent Bland hit a critical 3-pointer to push the lead back to 13. The Peacocks’ composure at the free throw line proved decisive in the final minutes. Leading 78-74 with 40 seconds left, Shaedon Simpson calmly sank three consecutive free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, effectively sealing the game. Saint Peter’s made 28 of 33 free throws overall, including 10 of 12 in the final two minutes.
Wucherpfennig, a junior from Teaneck, New Jersey, led all scorers with 23 points and added eight rebounds for Fairfield. Brandon Benjamin contributed 14 points and nine rebounds, while Braden Sparks added 15 points.
Saint Peter’s showcased balanced scoring. Robinson, a guard from Paterson, New Jersey, led the Peacocks with 21 points and four assists. Bland finished with 15 points, all from 3-point range, and Williamson recorded a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, anchoring the defense.
Saint Peter’s improved to 15-9 overall and strengthened its position in the MAAC standings. Fairfield fell to 16-11 with the loss, its second this season to the Peacocks, having also lost 70-66 on Dec. 29.
The Peacocks won despite being outscored 51-40 in the second half and 38-22 in the paint. They offset that with superior 3-point shooting, making 9 of 16 compared to Fairfield’s 4 of 10, and by scoring 25 points off 15 Stags turnovers.
Saint Peter’s next plays at Iona on Friday. Fairfield returns home to host Sacred Heart the same night.
