Moore’s 32 Points Lead Georgia Southern Past Marshall in Sun Belt Shootout
STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering first-half offensive display, Georgia Southern rode a historic scoring outburst to a decisive 101-87 victory over Marshall in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Eagles, fueled by a 59-point first half, built an insurmountable 17-point halftime lead and weathered a more competitive second half to snap a two-game skid and improve to 15-12 overall. Marshall, which entered the game as a significant favorite according to predictive metrics, fell to 16-10 despite a valiant effort after intermission.
The most important part of the game was unequivocally Georgia Southern’s explosive first-half performance. The Eagles shot a scorching percentage from the field, with their offensive execution leaving the Thundering Herd defense scrambling from the opening tip. This period established the entire narrative of the contest, as Marshall spent the final 20 minutes trying, and ultimately failing, to dig out of the deep deficit created in the opening frame.
Georgia Southern guard Tyren Moore, a junior from Louisville, Kentucky, was the catalyst for the offensive onslaught. He scored 32 points, dished out three assists and played 37 minutes, consistently hitting difficult shots to stifle any nascent Marshall momentum. His performance was a dramatic rebound from a one-point outing in his previous game.
Moore received ample support, particularly in the first half. Tavarus Webb, a hometown product from Hartwell, Georgia, added 18 points, while Alden Applewhite of Memphis, Tennessee, provided 14 points, four assists and three blocked shots. Jefferson Koulibaly contributed 16 points off the bench, and Nakavieon White chipped in 10 points and three assists.
Marshall, which scored 42 points in the first half and 45 in the second, was led by guard Jalen Speer’s 20 points and six assists. Landen Joseph scored 17 points, Wyatt Fricks added 17, and Noah Otshudi finished with 13 points. The Thundering Herd managed to narrow the gap at times in the second half, cutting it to single digits, but could never sustain a run significant enough to truly threaten the Eagles’ lead.
The game’s statistical profile highlighted Georgia Southern’s efficient night. The Eagles edged Marshall in points in the paint, 30-28, and fastbreak points, 9-8. Marshall managed to score 16 points off turnovers compared to Georgia Southern’s 12, but the Eagles’ superior shooting and first-half shot-making proved to be the decisive factors.
A crowd of 1,511 watched as Georgia Southern secured a critical conference victory, providing a boost ahead of a tough upcoming stretch. Marshall, meanwhile, will look to regroup quickly with another game in two days.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Huntington, West Virginia, on February 27.
