Gonzaga Holds Off Santa Clara for Key West Coast Conference Road Win
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a high-stakes West Coast Conference showdown that lived up to its billing, the Gonzaga Bulldogs weathered a fierce second-half challenge from the Santa Clara Broncos to secure a 94-86 victory on Saturday night at a sold-out Leavey Center.
The win, played before an energetic crowd of 4,200, solidified Gonzaga’s position atop the conference and improved its record to 25-2 overall. Santa Clara, which had won eight of its last nine games, fell to 22-6 with the hard-fought defeat.
The game’s defining dynamic was the interior dominance of Gonzaga’s Graham Ike. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward from Aurora, Colorado, was virtually unstoppable, scoring 21 points and anchoring a Bulldog attack that poured in 66 points in the paint. His physical presence forced Santa Clara into frequent foul trouble and created open looks for his teammates.
Ike was complemented by a potent scoring duo on the wing. Tyon Grant-Foster, a 6-7 guard from Kansas City, Kansas, added 20 points, while Adam Miller from Peoria, Illinois, chipped in 21, including several critical baskets down the stretch. Emmanuel Innocenti of Petit Badien, Ivory Coast, provided steady all-around play with 16 points in 38 minutes.
Santa Clara countered with balanced scoring and relentless energy, particularly in transition where they edged Gonzaga 20-19 in fastbreak points. Allen Graves, a 6-9 forward from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, led the Broncos with 13 points, while Christian Hammond of Denver and Elijah Mahi of Toronto each scored 16. The Broncos’ effort kept them within striking distance throughout the night.
Gonzaga established control early, using its size advantage to build a 44-39 halftime lead. The Bulldogs opened the second half with purpose, extending their lead to double digits. However, the Broncos, fueled by their home crowd, refused to capitulate. A 9-2 run midway through the half, capped by a Thierry Darlan three-pointer, cut Gonzaga’s lead to 57-53 and sent the arena into a frenzy.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred with just over six minutes remaining and Gonzaga clinging to a 66-64 lead. Following a Tyon Grant-Foster block on Elijah Mahi, the Bulldogs pushed the ball in transition. Mario Saint-Supery of Malaga, Spain, found Adam Miller for a clutch three-pointer from the wing, stretching the lead back to five and halting Santa Clara’s momentum. On the ensuing possession, Gonzaga’s defense forced a turnover, and Grant-Foster finished a driving layup through contact to push the advantage to 71-64, a cushion the Bulldogs would not relinquish.
Santa Clara made one final push in the closing minutes. A three-pointer by Sash Gavalyugov brought the Broncos within 79-77 with 1:44 to play, but Gonzaga’s execution at the free-throw line sealed the victory. The Bulldogs made 11 of their final 12 free throws in the last 1:08, with Miller and Saint-Supery combining for nine of those points, to close out the game.
Interstat’s ELO system had projected Gonzaga with a 71.2% probability to win. The Bulldogs validated that projection by winning the key statistical battles, outscoring Santa Clara 66-42 in the paint and 15-8 in points off turnovers.
Gonzaga will look to continue its conference momentum when it travels to face San Francisco on Wednesday. Santa Clara, meanwhile, will aim to rebound on the road at San Francisco next Saturday.
