Iowa State Dominates Kansas in Big 12 Rematch
AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a stark reversal from their meeting just a month prior, the Iowa State Cyclones delivered a commanding defensive performance to dominate the Kansas Jayhawks 74-56 in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Hilton Coliseum.
A raucous crowd of 14,267 watched the Cyclones, fueled by a relentless defensive effort that generated 19 points off turnovers, avenge an 84-63 loss in Lawrence on Jan. 13. Iowa State improved to 22-3 overall and strengthened its position atop the conference, while Kansas fell to 19-6.
The most critical phase of the game was a decisive 14-0 run by Iowa State that bridged the end of the first half and the start of the second, transforming a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. Leading 37-27 at halftime, the Cyclones came out of the break with devastating efficiency. Milan Momcilovic, who finished with a game-high 18 points, ignited the run with a 3-pointer off an assist from Tamin Lipsey. On the next possession, Momcilovic connected again from beyond the arc, pushing the lead to 16.
After a Kansas turnover, Lipsey, who had 11 points and four assists, buried another three, forcing a full Kansas timeout with the Cyclones ahead 46-27 just over two minutes into the second half. The Jayhawks, who managed zero fastbreak points and only seven points off turnovers for the game, never recovered from the blitz. Their offense, which shot poorly across the board, was consistently disrupted by Iowa State’s pressure, leading to 12 more points for the Cyclones in the period.
Kansas, which had won five of its last six, was led by Melvin Council’s 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Flory Bidunga recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, but the Jayhawks’ attack was otherwise stifled. They scored only 29 points in the second half, mirroring their 27-point first-half output, and could not string together a sustained rally.
Iowa State’s victory was a balanced effort. Alongside Momcilovic and Lipsey, Blake Buchanan scored 11 points with six rebounds, Joshua Jefferson added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Jamarion Batemon chipped in 11 points off the bench. The Cyclones shot consistently in both halves, scoring 37 points in each period, and their defense held Kansas to its second-lowest point total of the season.
The game’s tone was set early. After a Bidunga dunk gave Kansas a 2-0 lead, Iowa State’s defense locked in. The Jayhawks went scoreless for over four minutes, and a Batemon 3-pointer capped a 9-0 Cyclone run. Kansas battled to keep pace behind Council, who hit two first-half 3-pointers, but Iowa State steadily expanded its lead. A late first-half sequence, featuring a Buchanan put-back dunk and free throws from Lipsey, sent the Cyclones into the locker room with a 10-point advantage and all the momentum, which they explosively capitalized on to start the second half.
According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Iowa State was projected with a 63.2% probability to win and entered as a 5.5-point favorite. The combined score of 130 fell well under the over/under line of 142.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest.
Kansas looks to rebound on the road at Oklahoma State on Wednesday. Iowa State, now riding a wave of confidence, faces a quick turnaround with a major home test against Houston on Monday.
