Houser Leads Delaware to Road Upset Over Missouri State
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance and a career-high 21 points from Tyler Houser propelled the Delaware Blue Hens to a 76-67 upset victory over the Missouri State Bears in a Conference USA men’s basketball game Saturday at JQH Arena.
Delaware, which entered the game with just eight wins, built a commanding 35-25 halftime lead by stifling the Bears’ offense. Missouri State shot poorly from the field in the opening period, managing only 25 points as Delaware’s defense forced nine turnovers and blocked two shots. The Blue Hens’ interior presence was key, holding Missouri State to just 20 points in the paint for the game while scoring 30 themselves.
The Bears, favored by 7.5 points and projected by analytics to have a 74% chance of victory, awoke after halftime. Led by Kobi Williams, who scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, Missouri State mounted a furious rally. The Bears outscored Delaware 42-41 after the break, repeatedly cutting into the double-digit deficit. A 3-pointer from Trey Williams, who finished with 13 points, brought Missouri State within 65-62 with just 41 seconds remaining, sending anxiety through the crowd of 2,157.
Delaware, however, had an answer for every Missouri State surge, largely due to the poised play of its backcourt. Christian Bliss of Queens, New York, orchestrated the offense with eight assists and 12 points, often finding Houser or Justyn Fernandez for critical baskets. After Trey Williams’ three made it a one-possession game, Bliss immediately fed Macon Emory for a layup to push the lead back to five with 45 seconds left.
The final minute became a parade to the free-throw line for Fernandez, a guard from Richmond, Virginia. He calmly sank four consecutive foul shots in the closing seconds to seal the victory, finishing with 23 points. Emory, from Devon, Pennsylvania, added 18 points and eight rebounds, providing a crucial secondary scoring option alongside Houser and Fernandez.
Houser, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound forward from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, was the cornerstone of the win. He shot efficiently from the field, added nine rebounds and three assists, and his early scoring helped establish the lead Delaware would never relinquish. His performance continued a strong stretch of play, following a 17-point outing in a win at Florida International just three days prior.
For Missouri State, the loss spoiled a valiant comeback effort and standout performances from Williams and Michael Osei-Bonsu, who contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Keith Palek added 11 points and six rebounds for the Bears, who fell to 13-12 overall.
The most important part of the game was Delaware’s ability to withstand Missouri State’s intense second-half pressure. The Bears, playing at home and with significant momentum, trimmed the lead to a single possession multiple times in the final five minutes. Each time, Delaware executed its offense under duress, scoring on key possessions through Bliss’s playmaking and the finishing of Houser and Emory. This composure, absent in many of their 16 losses this season, allowed them to close out a rare road victory against a team that had beaten them by 18 points just seven weeks prior.
The victory improved Delaware’s record to 9-16, while Missouri State dropped to 13-12. The combined score of 143 points went over the pregame over/under line of 134.
Delaware returns home to face Western Kentucky on Wednesday. Missouri State will host Kennesaw State the same night.
