TCU Outlasts Iowa State in Defensive Big 12 Clash
FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and critical mistakes, the Texas Christian Horned Frogs capitalized on a decisive late surge to defeat the Iowa State Cyclones 62-55 in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Dickies Arena.
A crowd of 4,944 watched as the Horned Frogs, improving to 15-9 overall, overcame a halftime deficit by clamping down defensively and converting free throws down the stretch. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the 21-3 Cyclones, who entered as a six-point favorite but struggled mightily on offense all evening.
The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the final minutes with the outcome still in doubt. Leading 52-50 with under three minutes to play, Texas Christian secured separation with a 10-2 run. The burst was ignited by Jayden Pierre, who hit a crucial hook shot in the lane to extend the lead to four. After an Iowa State shot clock violation, Pierre delivered the dagger, draining a 3-pointer from the wing with 48 seconds remaining to push the advantage to 57-50.
Iowa State, which had fought to stay within striking distance despite a poor shooting night, could not respond. The Cyclones committed two turnovers in the final 31 seconds, which Texas Christian converted into transition dunks by Micah Robinson to seal the victory.
The contest was a stark contrast in styles and efficiency. Iowa State dominated inside, scoring 38 points in the paint to Texas Christian’s 28, and won the rebounding battle. However, the Cyclones’ offense was undone by perimeter shooting and uncharacteristic errors. They shot just 24 of 57 from the field, a meager 5 of 23 from 3-point range, and a disastrous 2 of 8 from the free throw line. The 15 turnovers they committed led to 19 points for the Horned Frogs.
Texas Christian, while not shooting much better overall at 21 of 52, was more effective from deep, hitting 5 of 18, and critically superior at the charity stripe. The Horned Frogs made 15 of 23 free throws, with Tanner Toolson accounting for several key makes late. They also leveraged their defense, recording 12 steals and forcing those 15 turnovers, which fueled a 15-4 advantage in fastbreak points.
Toolson and Robinson led Texas Christian with 17 points each. Toolson’s scoring, particularly his ability to draw fouls and convert in the second half, was instrumental. Robinson added a steady presence inside and in transition. David Punch contributed 8 points, 4 assists and 2 blocks, while Xavier Edmonds anchored the defense with 4 blocks.
For Iowa State, Joshua Jefferson filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 9 assists and 2 blocks but was hampered by 6 turnovers. Tamin Lipsey also scored 12 points with 5 assists. The Cyclones’ offensive rating of 81.1 points per 100 possessions was a season low, underscoring their struggles against an active Texas Christian defense.
The first half was a low-scoring affair that foreshadowed the game’s tone. Iowa State took a 30-29 lead into the break by working the ball inside, but both teams combined for 18 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. The Cyclones maintained a narrow lead for much of the second half until Texas Christian’s defense triggered the game-changing run.
The Horned Frogs’ ability to control the tempo, disrupt Iowa State’s rhythm, and execute in the final minutes proved the difference in a game where offensive execution was at a premium. The 117 combined points fell far below the pregame over/under line of 147.5.
Iowa State will look to rebound at home against Kansas on Saturday. Texas Christian travels to face Oklahoma State, also on Saturday.
