Williams Powers Arkansas-Pine Bluff Past Jackson State

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Interstat) — Quion Williams scored 25 points and Arkansas-Pine Bluff used a dominant first-half run to seize control and never looked back, defeating Jackson State 84-63 in a Southwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Monday night at HPER Complex.

The Golden Lions (11-13, 7-4 SWAC) won their third straight conference game by overwhelming the Tigers (7-17, 5-6) with efficient offense and disruptive defense, turning a tight early contest into a comfortable victory in front of 2,046 fans.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded midway through the first half, transforming a narrow margin into a commanding lead that Jackson State could not overcome. With Arkansas-Pine Bluff leading 20-14 and just under eight minutes remaining in the period, the Golden Lions unleashed a decisive 14-2 surge. Williams, a 6-foot-5 guard from Jonesboro, Arkansas, was the catalyst, scoring nine points during the run. He capped the spurt with a three-point play, converting a free throw after being fouled on a pull-up jumper, to extend the lead to 34-16.

Jackson State, which shot just 36.5 percent from the field for the game, struggled to generate consistent offense against the Golden Lions’ defense. The Tigers were held to a season-low offensive rating of 93.9 points per 100 possessions, committing 12 turnovers against only five assists. Dorian McMillian led Jackson State with 24 points on 9-of-23 shooting, while Jayme Mitchell added 13 points.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff, conversely, operated with precision, posting an offensive rating of 129.3. The Golden Lions shot 50.9 percent from the floor (29 of 57) and 45 percent from three-point range (9 of 20). They also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 17 of 21 attempts.

Williams filled the stat sheet beyond his scoring, adding six assists, a block and a steal in 33 minutes. His backcourt partner, Alex Mirhosseini, chipped in 11 points and five assists. The Golden Lions’ frontcourt provided a major boost, with Jaquan Scott scoring 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Trevon Payton adding 13 points, including three three-pointers.

The Tigers briefly showed signs of life after halftime, with Tamarion Hoover hitting a pair of three-pointers to cut the deficit to 48-41. But Arkansas-Pine Bluff responded with a 12-4 run, keyed by a Ramel Lloyd three-pointer and interior baskets from Scott, to push the lead back to 60-45 and effectively end the competitive phase of the game. The Golden Lions led by as many as 23 points in the second half.

Jackson State’s offensive woes were underscored by its 7-of-27 shooting from beyond the arc and a stark assist-to-turnover ratio. Despite grabbing 15 offensive rebounds, the Tigers could not translate second chances into enough points to mount a serious threat.

With the victory, Arkansas-Pine Bluff moves into a more favorable position in the SWAC standings as the conference schedule enters its final weeks. The Golden Lions will travel to face Alabama State on Saturday. Jackson State, which has lost two of its last three, will look to regroup at home against Florida A&M on Saturday.
