Michigan Dominates Ohio State in Big Ten Road Victory
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive intensity and interior dominance, the Michigan Wolverines solidified their hold on the Big Ten Conference with a decisive 82-61 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon at a sold-out Value City Arena.
The No. 1-ranked Wolverines, playing as the visiting team, improved to 22-1 overall and 12-1 in conference play, extending their winning streak to four games. Ohio State fell to 15-8 and 7-6.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded early in the second half. Leading 44-34 at halftime, Michigan opened the period with a 10-2 run, effectively extinguishing any hope of a Buckeye rally. The sequence was anchored by their formidable frontcourt, with Yaxel Lendeborg scoring on a dunk and Aday Mara adding a turnaround jumper and a powerful dunk in transition. That surge pushed the lead to 54-36, and Ohio State never threatened again, unable to cut the deficit below 14 points for the remainder of the contest.
Michigan’s victory was built on overwhelming advantages in the paint and in transition. The Wolverines outscored Ohio State 42-20 in the paint and held a 10-0 edge in fastbreak points. They also capitalized on Buckeye mistakes, scoring 20 points off turnovers. Defensively, Michigan stifled the Ohio State attack, limiting the home team to just 27 second-half points.
Lendeborg, a 6-foot-9 junior from Pennsauken, New Jersey, was the game’s standout performer, posting a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds to go with three assists and a block in 31 minutes. His work on the glass was pivotal, helping Michigan to a commanding rebounding advantage.
He was complemented brilliantly by the 7-foot-3 freshman Mara from Zaragoza, Spain. Mara exploited his significant height advantage to score a game-high 24 points on efficient shooting, adding six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Morez Johnson, a 6-9 forward from Riverdale, Illinois, also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while guard Trey McKenney of Flint, Michigan, contributed 12 points.
Ohio State was led by Bruce Thornton, who scored 16 points and dished out four assists. Devin Royal added 15 points and six rebounds, and Christoph Tilly chipped in 10 points. The Buckeyes struggled to find consistent offense, shooting poorly from the field and failing to generate any easy baskets in transition.
The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting just over two weeks prior in Ann Arbor, a 74-62 Michigan win. This performance was more emphatic, showcasing the Wolverines’ depth and defensive prowess on the road before a crowd of 17,684.
Michigan now looks ahead to a road test at Northwestern on Wednesday. Ohio State will aim to regroup at home against Southern California on the same night. The Wolverines’ performance Sunday served notice that they remain the team to beat, not just in the Big Ten, but nationally, as they continue a season that has seen them win 22 of their first 23 games.
