Preview: Houston Cougars at BYU Cougars
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — A battle of Cougars with championship implications will unfold Saturday when Houston visits BYU in a pivotal Big 12 Conference men’s basketball matchup at the Marriott Center.
Houston (20-2, 9-1 Big 12) arrives in Provo riding a three-game winning streak and sitting atop the conference standings. Kelvin Sampson’s squad, renowned for its stifling defense, has held opponents to 55 points or fewer in three of its last four games, including a 79-55 rout of UCF on Wednesday.
The visiting Cougars are powered by guard Kingston Flemings, who is averaging 19.1 points and 6.4 assists over his last seven games. He erupted for 42 points in a narrow road loss to Texas Tech on Jan. 24 and scored 27 in a win at TCU four days later.
They face a BYU team (16-5, 5-4) desperate to steady itself after losing three of its last four, all by single digits. The home Cougars fell 99-92 at Oklahoma State on Wednesday despite a 36-point effort from freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa.
Dybantsa has been a consistent offensive force, scoring 20 or more points in five of his last seven contests. His season-high 43 points powered BYU’s 91-78 victory over Utah on Jan. 24.
This marks the first meeting between the programs as Big 12 foes. Houston’s elite defense, which leads the nation in fewest points allowed per game, will be tested by BYU’s high-powered, perimeter-oriented attack. BYU leads the conference in 3-pointers made per game.
A key storyline will be Houston’s ability to contain Dybantsa and whether BYU can handle Houston’s physical pressure and find clean looks from deep. For BYU, a win would represent a monumental resume boost. For Houston, it is a critical test in a hostile environment to maintain its league lead.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST Saturday. Houston visits Utah on Tuesday, while BYU travels to Baylor.
