Eastern Illinois Holds Off Tennessee Tech Rally for Road Win
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first half and a frantic second, Eastern Illinois withstood a furious Tennessee Tech rally to secure a 60-54 victory in Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball on Saturday afternoon at Eblen Center.
The Panthers built a commanding 31-19 lead by halftime, capitalizing on a disastrous opening period by the Golden Eagles. Tennessee Tech committed 13 of its 20 total turnovers in the first half, shot just 3 of 20 from three-point range for the game, and managed only two assists against 20 turnovers overall. Eastern Illinois’s defensive pressure was relentless, generating 10 steals and converting 16 points off those miscues.
The most important part of the game was Eastern Illinois’s ability to establish immediate control through defense and efficiency, then hold on despite a second-half offensive drought. The Panthers opened the game on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a Nazareth Fisher tip-in and an early three-pointer from Zion Fruster. Tennessee Tech’s offense was out of sync from the start, plagued by turnovers and missed shots, and did not reach double figures until a JaJuan Nicholls layup with 10:28 remaining in the first half. Eastern Illinois led by as many as 14 points before the break.
Tennessee Tech emerged from halftime a different team, spearheaded by Nicholls. The Golden Eagles outscored Eastern Illinois 35-29 in the second half, trimming what was once a 16-point deficit down to just four points in the final minutes. A three-pointer from Brandon Muntu made it 52-48 with 3:22 to play, capping a sustained push that put the outcome in doubt.
However, Eastern Illinois sealed the game at the free-throw line. Leading 54-52 with under a minute to play, the Panthers hit six consecutive free throws—four from Zion Fruster and two from Terry McMorris—over the final 48 seconds to close out the win. Tennessee Tech’s comeback bid was ultimately undone by its own inaccuracy from deep and the early hole it dug.
Eastern Illinois was led by Zion Fruster, who scored a game-high 20 points. Meechie White added 11 points and four assists, while Kooper Jacobi contributed 10 points. The Panthers shot 38.9% from the field but were efficient from the line, making 13 of 16 free throws.
For Tennessee Tech, JaJuan Nicholls was a force, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jacobe Whitted added 10 points. The Golden Eagles were effective at the charity stripe, making 17 of 20 attempts, but their 15% shooting from three-point range and catastrophic assist-to-turnover ratio proved insurmountable.
The game was a defensive struggle, with Eastern Illinois posting an offensive rating of 97.4 points per 100 possessions and Tennessee Tech managing just 83.7. Both teams now hold identical season records of 10-15 overall.
Eastern Illinois, which had lost three of its last four conference games, snapped a two-game skid. Tennessee Tech saw a two-game winning streak end. The Panthers swept the season series, having also defeated the Golden Eagles 71-61 on Jan. 8 in Charleston.
Attendance was 1,077 at the Eblen Center. Eastern Illinois travels to face Western Illinois on Tuesday. Tennessee Tech visits Morehead State on Thursday.
