Baylor at Iowa State
AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — A surging Iowa State team riding a four-game win streak will host a Baylor squad seeking a season-defining road victory when the Cyclones meet the Bears in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball showdown Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State (20-2, 7-2 Big 12) has rebounded emphatically from a two-game skid in mid-January, winning its last four contests by an average margin of 30.5 points. That dominant stretch includes a 95-61 rout of Kansas State last Sunday, led by point guard Tamin Lipsey’s 16 points, five rebounds and nine assists. Lipsey, averaging 12.1 points and 5.8 assists, is the engine for one of the nation’s top defenses.
Baylor (13-9, 4-5) arrives with momentum after an 86-67 home win over Colorado on Wednesday, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Bears are led by the high-scoring Tounde Yessoufou, who erupted for 27 points in that victory. The sophomore guard has scored 20 or more points in five of his last nine games, including a 23-point performance in a road win at Oklahoma State last month.
The Cyclones won the season’s first meeting 70-60 in Waco on Jan. 7, holding Baylor to 36.2% shooting from the field. Replicating that defensive effort will be key against a Bears offense that found its rhythm Wednesday, with Yessoufou, Obi Agbim (19 points) and Cameron Carr (19 points) all scoring efficiently.
For Iowa State, balance beyond Lipsey is a strength. Forward Joshua Jefferson is coming off a 19-point, eight-rebound, five-assist performance against Kansas State, and transfer Nate Heise added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
A Baylor upset would require conquering one of the nation’s most formidable home environments. Hilton Coliseum has been a fortress, with Iowa State boasting a perfect 13-0 record at home this season. The Bears, just 2-5 in true road games, will need Yessoufou’s offensive firepower to counter Iowa State’s relentless, turnover-forcing defense.
Saturday’s contest is a critical opportunity for Baylor to bolster its postseason resume with a Quad 1 road win, while Iowa State looks to maintain its hold atop the conference standings and strengthen its case for a high NCAA tournament seed.
