Longwood at Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Winthrop squad will look to avenge an early conference loss and extend its winning streak when it hosts Longwood in a key Big South men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Winthrop Coliseum.
The Eagles (17-8, 7-3 Big South) enter on a seven-game winning streak, their latest a narrow 80-78 road victory at Radford on Wednesday. Their last defeat came against these same Lancers, 82-70, in Farmville on Dec. 31.
Winthrop’s resurgence has been fueled by forward Logan Duncomb, who is playing at an all-conference level. During the streak, he is averaging 22.1 points per game, including a 38-point outburst in a win at Presbyterian on Jan. 24. He posted 18 points and five assists in the win over Radford.
Longwood (13-12, 5-5) arrives after a dominant 86-66 road win at Gardner-Webb, snapping a two-game skid. The Lancers are led by guard Johan Nziemi, who scored 20 points in that victory. He was also instrumental in the first meeting with Winthrop, though individual stats from that game were not provided.
The Lancers have proven capable, boasting the conference’s most recent win over the Eagles. Their formula then involved containing Duncomb, who was held to eight points in the December loss, and efficient offense.
This rematch presents a stark contrast in momentum. Winthrop, near the top of the conference standings, is protecting its home floor where it is 10-2 this season. Longwood, hovering around .500, seeks a season sweep to solidify its position in the league table.
Saturday’s contest will hinge on whether Winthrop’s high-powered offense, averaging 84.4 points during its streak, can solve a Longwood defense that held it to a season-low 70 points, or if the Lancers can again disrupt the Eagles’ rhythm and steal a critical road win.
Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
