Blue Hens Edge Blue Raiders in Overtime Thriller

NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — In a game defined by extraordinary offensive efficiency and a dramatic final sequence, Justyn Fernandez’s turnaround jumper with 16 seconds left in overtime lifted Delaware to an 89-88 victory over Middle Tennessee in a non-conference men’s basketball thriller Saturday at Bob Carpenter Center.

The contest, a high-level shooting display that saw both teams post offensive ratings over 129, required an extra period after the teams finished regulation tied at 79. It was Fernandez, Delaware’s top performer, who delivered the decisive blow, scoring 27 points to help the Blue Hens snap a two-game skid and improve to 7-16.

Middle Tennessee, which fell to 11-12, had a final possession to win or tie. After a timeout with 11 seconds remaining, the Blue Raiders worked the ball to Kamari Lands, whose contested jump shot from the wing as time expired missed the mark, sealing the one-point victory for the home team before a crowd of 2,460.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final minute of overtime. With Delaware leading 87-84, Middle Tennessee’s Torey Alston was fouled and made two free throws to cut the deficit to one with 41 seconds left. On the ensuing Delaware possession, the Blue Hens ran the clock down before Fernandez, isolated on the left block, hit a difficult fallaway jumper over his defender for an 89-86 lead.

Middle Tennessee called timeout and advanced the ball. Out of the stoppage, Alec Oglesby was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 23 seconds left. He made the first two free throws to pull within 89-88 but missed the third. Delaware’s Macon Emory secured the crucial defensive rebound and was immediately fouled. Emory missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Blue Raiders their last chance, which ended with Lands’ missed attempt.

The game was an offensive showcase from the start, with both teams shooting better than 54% from the field. Delaware was particularly lethal from beyond the arc, connecting on 14 of 28 3-point attempts. Middle Tennessee countered by hitting 11 of 33 from deep and dominating the offensive glass, 14-5, which led to 18 second-chance points.

Fernandez led all Delaware scorers, adding eight rebounds and four assists in 45 minutes. Christian Bliss orchestrated the Blue Hens’ attack with a stat line of 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Alex Kazanecki provided critical perimeter scoring with 15 points, all on 3-pointers.

Middle Tennessee’s attack was powered by a trio of 20-point scorers. Lands, Alston and Oglesby each scored 21 points. Alston added five rebounds and three assists, while Oglesby hit five 3-pointers. Chris Loofe anchored the interior with eight rebounds and a block.

The Blue Raiders led 43-41 at halftime and maintained a narrow margin for much of the second half. A key sequence late in regulation saw Delaware’s Bliss tie the game at 79 on a driving layup with 1:50 remaining. Both teams had chances to win in the final 90 seconds of the second half but came up empty, sending the game to overtime tied.

In the extra period, the teams traded baskets until a 3-pointer from Delaware’s Bliss put the Blue Hens up 87-84 with 2:16 to go, setting the stage for the frantic finish.

Despite the loss, Middle Tennessee outperformed its pregame expectations as a 5-point favorite. The combined score of 177 points far exceeded the over/under line of 130, highlighting the game’s unexpectedly prolific offense.

Delaware next travels to face Florida International on Thursday. Middle Tennessee looks to rebound on the road at Kennesaw State, also on Thursday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Murfreesboro on Feb. 21.
